Kelly Clarkson Gives Dating Life Update Following Brandon Blackstock Divorce: ‘I’m Not Not Looking’
Kelly Clarkson isn’t closing the book on a potential happily-ever-after romance. More than three years after her divorce from Brandon Blackstock, the American Idol alum offered fans a rare update into her dating life.
Kelly, 43, was asked whether she was holding out hope for a “unicorn moment” of finding love during an appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends on Tuesday, May 6.
“Yeah, I mean, I hope it does!” the “Stronger” artist told Jenna Bush Hager and guest cohost Matt Rogers. “I will say, I’m not not looking and I’m not looking. I’m very busy. You get this as a mom. I’ve got to focus right now. There’s a lot of work.”
Kelly, who shares River, 10, and Remy, 9, with Brandon, 48, explained she felt that her children’s schedules were “busier” than hers and being present in their lives was her priority.
“I’m running from my show to baseball practice and I’m trying to be just there. It’s a lot. My mom will tell me, ‘Look, I was a single mom. I didn’t get to make everything. They’re gonna be fine. You turned out fine,'” Kelly revealed, acknowledging the struggles of balancing work and parenting. The “Because of You” singer added that she’s also making a conscious effort to carve out more time for herself, especially while on tour.

The new man in Kelly’s life will have big shoes to fill as she admitted in the past that her kids weren’t exactly thrilled about the idea of her dating again. “They constantly bring it up, ‘Please, we don’t want you with anybody else,’” the mom of two said of her two children during an appearance on KOST 103.5 in November 2024. “They’re young, it’s hard to picture their mom with someone else other than their dad.”
However, Kelly managed to lighten their mood by adding, “I have expressed like, ‘Hey, I love you guys but Mommy needs lovings too.’”
Kelly filed for divorce from Brandon in 2020 after almost seven years of marriage. Things only got more complicated between the former couple as a legal battle ensued.
Although they were declared legally single in 2021, their divorce wasn’t settled until a year later. In March 2022, the three-time Grammy winner was ordered to pay her ex a one-time payment of $1.3 million, along with $200,000 a month in spousal and child support until January 2024. As a part of their agreement, Kelly was granted primary custody of their children, while Brandon was given custody one weekend every month.
That same year, the Kelly Clarkson Show host shared that she approached the topic of divorce with her children honestly, emphasizing her hope to turn the experience into a valuable life lesson.
“I think the most important thing I’ve learned in therapy, especially through this divorce, is ‘Don’t hide everything from your kids.’ Obviously, don’t talk about stuff that you shouldn’t talk about, but it’s okay if they see you cry, or it’s okay if they see you’ve had a bad day,” she told Variety in September 2022.
