Kristin Cavallari Shares Frightening Story of Time She Caught Burglar Crawling on Her Bedroom Floor
A frightening encounter with a burglar has stuck with The Hills alum Kristin Cavallari for the last few years.
The reality star, 37, opened up about her experience with an intruder in her home during the Tuesday, December 17, episode of her “Let’s Be Honest” podcast and revealed that her “kids still do not know [this] to this day.” Kristin explained that the incident occurred in 2020 while she and ex-husband Jay Cutler were on a family trip to the Bahamas with kids Camden, Jaxon and Saylor.
During their month-long stay at the home, the HVAC unit broke and needed repairs. At the time, Kristin said she had jewelry items from her Uncommon James brand in her closet.
“That night I had [my son] Cam in the bed with me. Cam and I were sleeping,” she revealed. “And I woke up to a man crawling on my bedroom floor.”
Kristin continued, “I was so out of it because obviously I had just woken up. And I go, ‘What the f–k are you doing?’ And this man stands up, runs out the door, and, you guys, he had a ski mask on, full black arms, black pants, the full thing. And I went, ‘Oh, f–k.’”
The Laguna Beach alum added that she “didn’t yell” because Cam, who was about 9 years old at the time, was asleep next to her.
“I didn’t scream. You think in those moments that that’s what you’d do, but your instincts just kick in. I honestly felt like I was in Mission Impossible,” she said. “Once I woke Jay up, then I got really nervous. Then I start [to get] like, really scared. I started shaking, and I was able to process then what just happened. But until that point, I was not scared. I was really calm. You just are running off of instinct.”
Kristin revealed that the burglar “took all of the cash that we had in a backpack,” but they “ended up getting it back.”
“We found out who it was. It was the HVAC guy,” she continued.
As for why Kristin has decided not to tell her children about the incident, she explained, “That’s just one that I think would really scare them.”
“I will not tell them, probably, until they’re adults,” she added, calling it “one of the scariest things that I went through.” “Because I just think some things kids do not need to know. And scary stuff like that, I will take that one.”
Kristin has done everything she can to protect Cam, now 12, Jaxon, 10, and Saylor, 9, from harm. After Jay, 41, was arrested in Tennessee for driving under the influence with two firearms on October 17 and was released on a $5,000 bond, a source exclusively told Life & Style that the mom of three became worried about her kids, who were not with their dad at the time of his arrest.
“The fact that he was arrested with a loaded firearm in the car is disturbing to her,” the insider said. “She doesn’t want her kids anywhere near guns.”
The source continued, “She had a sense something was going on with Jay. He needs to get his act together and her kids need her.”
Kristin and Jay were married from 2012 to 2022. During the October 1 episode of her podcast, she revealed that her custody agreement with Jay has “changed,” but she did not elaborate on how.
“When I was dating last fall, I was still doing split custody with my ex and I had every other week off from my kids and that’s changed,” she said. “So, I’m really happy and really content having my life right now being about my kids and my work.”
