He’s finally breaking his silence. Mac Miller has opened up about his split from Ariana Grande, as well as her engagement to Pete Davidson, in a new interview with Beats 1. On Monday, July 23, the rapper sat down with host Zane Lowe to share what really went down.

“Life is stressful, so of course there were stressful times. It’s not that unique,” Mac explained. “I was in love with somebody. We were together for two years. We worked through good times, bad times, stress, and everything else. And then it came to an end and we both moved on. And it’s that simple.”

The two called it quits in April ahead of Coachella 2018, and shortly after, the “God is a Woman” singer started dating Pete. Since the new couple made their relationship ~Instagram official~, Ariana and Pete have continuously packed on the PDA. So what has it been like for Mac, 26, to watch his ex fall in love with someone else?

“Like I haven’t been on the Internet,” Mac clarified. “So, you know, people have assumed that I’m… ‘Are you OK? Is everything OK?’ Because I was about to drop the album. And also, like, I don’t know, it just all seemed kind of unimportant, the need to show people I was OK. Like, what is that? Where does that come from? Why? Why do we have this need to use social media and the Internet?”

Ultimately, Mac made it clear it’s “a little strange” watching Ariana move on. However, he says “it’s not negative.”

“It’s just a part of something that’s going to continue to help make me who I am. You know, it’s all positive energy.” He continued, “I am happy for her and moving forward with her life, just as I’m sure she is with me.”
