New year, new look! Pop icon Madonna surprised fans when she took to Instagram on Friday, January 18, to share a selfie with one of her twin daughters — and she looked almost unrecognizable. The “Material Girl” singer not only rocked a new brunette ‘do, but a seemingly new face. Now, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Norman Rowe exclusively reveals to Life & Style why Madonna seems to look so different in her new picture.

“It looks to me as if Madonna has had some filler injected in her cheeks because they appear more full than they have previously,” Dr. Rowe, who has not treated the 60-year-old, tells Life & Style. “Cheek fillers are VERY [sic] common in my practice. It is such a popular procedure because 1. They will give you more contoured cheekbones, 2. They can elevate cheeks that have fallen due to the aging process. I personally don’t think Madonna is using a filter because of experience.”

Cheek fillers are a type of dermal filler, and it’s similar to lip fillers — which is a popular procedure in Hollywood. According to Dr. Rowe, it’s also a very safe procedure. “The only risk involved is overdoing it!” he said.

And according to her adoring fans, Madonna looks amazing with her new look. Many of them flooded her comments to compliment her. “You have the most amazing skin and I love the new hair,” one fan wrote, and another commented, “You look 10 years younger. Love it.”

This is the second time that the singer has sparked plastic surgery rumors this month. On New Year’s Eve, Madge resurfaced for a surprise performance at the legendary gay bar The Stonewall Inn in NYC. She belted out several of her hit songs for fans, but as video clips of her performance surfaced, all fans could seem to talk about was her seemingly bigger booty.

But the queen of pop was not here for anyone’s opinion of her body and she shut down the rumors on Instagram. “Desperately seeking no one’s approval and entitled to free agency over my body like everyone else!!” she wrote.
