Goodbyes are never easy. On season 4 of Riverdale, the characters will be facing the challenge of saying their farewell to Fred Andrews, who was played by the late actor Luke Perry.

On Sunday, October 6, a new Riverdale trailer for the upcoming season premiered at New York Comic Con, which gave away some details of how the show will address Luke’s death on the show. In the clip, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) are at their usual hangout spot — Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe. The group of friends are discussing summer plans ahead of their senior year of high school when all of a sudden Archie, who is Luke’s onscreen son, gets a phone call from his dad, Fred.

The camera then cuts to a shot of Archie falling over and dropping his phone. “It hurts me that I never got to say goodbye,” he says shaken up as a photo of Fred is shown at what appears to be his burial. “Fred Andrews will always be a part of Riverdale,” Archie continues.

Luke passed away on March 4, at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California after suffering a massive stroke in his home on February 27. “He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends,” Luke’s team said in a statement at the time. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. No further details will be released at this time.”

Two days after his passing, the Riverdale cast and crew dedicated the March 6 episode to the late star as a way to honor him. “Going through pictures on my way to set,” producer/writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted alongside a photo with the team. “From the early days. With Luke in the middle. Our heart, always. Tonight’s episode of #Riverdale finds Fred doing what he does best — helping Archie. It is dedicated to Luke, as all episodes will be for the rest of our run.”

Season 4 of Riverdale premieres on the CW on Wednesday, October 9, at 8 p.m. ET.
