Which Celebrities Died in 2025? Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson and More Who Passed Away This Year
The new year brought sad news, with the deaths of celebrities happening as 2025 got underway.
Top Gun star Val Kilmer died on April 1. Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on April 21, and Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre died by suicide on April 24.
On May 2, Floribama Shore star Kirk Medas died at age 33, followed by 90 Day Fiance star Ben Rathbun’s death at age 55 on May 20. Later that day, Cheers alum George Wendt’s family announced he died peacefully at the age of 76.
On May 25, the family of Duck Dynasty star Phil Roberton confirmed his death at 79, just months after publicly revealing his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Phil Roberston, known for his appearances on the Duck Dynasty franchise, died at 79, his family confirmed on May 25. His death came months after his Alzheimer’s diagnosis was publicly revealed during a December 2024 episode of his son Jase Robertson’s “Unashamed with the Robertson Family” podcast.

Today cohost Sheinelle Jones’ husband, Uche Ojeh, died at 45 years old after a brain cancer battle, Savannah Guthrie announced on May 23.
“With profound sadness, we share this morning that Uche Ojeh, the husband of our dear friend and Today cohost Sheinelle Jones has passed away after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer called glioblastoma,” she said. “There are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him.”
Sheinelle, who shared kids Kayin, Clara and Uche with her husband, has not appeared on the morning show since December 2024.

Actor George Wendt’s family announced that the Cheers alum died on May 20 at the age of 76.
The former NBC star passed away in his sleep at home, his loved ones told People through his publicist.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever,” his family noted.
The star played Norm Peterson on Cheers from 1982 through 1993.

90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days star Ben Rathbun, known for his relationship with Mahogany Roca, died at 55 years old on May 20, 2025.
Sources told TMZ that the reality TV personality had been battling stage IV stomach cancer since late 2024, and Ben died surrounded by his family in Greencastle, Indiana.

Survivor: Nicaragua star Jane Bright died at the age of 71, her daughter, Ashley Hammett, announced on May 15.
“Today Jane Hammett Bright was found passed away within her home by a good friend and county sheriff,” Ashley wrote via Facebook.
Jane was so loved by Survivor fans that she took home the $100,000 fan favorite prize during her season in 2010.
The North Carolina dog trainer was close to may Survivor alums, who paid tribute to Jane on social media.
"One of our favorite survivors. Always had a smile on her face," show legend Sandra Diaz-Twine captioned a series of photos with Jane over the years.

Floribama Shore star Kirk Medas died on May 2 at age 33, following complications from necrotizing pancreatitis that led to liver failure, per TMZ.
“Kirk was the glue that held us all together,” castmate Aimee Hall wrote in a heartfelt Instagram tribute. “He loved each and every one of us so deeply, with a heart bigger than this world.”

Comedian and actress Ruth Buzzi died from complications from Alzheimer’s disease at her home near Fort Worth, Texas, on May 1, her longtime rep told The Hollywood Reporter.
Ruth was best known as one of the stars of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In and appeared on Sesame Street as Suzie Kabloozie in the 1990s. She starred in numerous films, including 1976’s Freaky Friday as well as 1979’s The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again. Ruth was introduced to a new generation of fans when she played Screech’s mom on Saved by the Bell.

Retired actress and Carrie star Priscilla Pointer died at the age of 100 on April 29, her daughter, actress Amy Irving, announced.
The two women starred together in the iconic 1976 horror film. Priscilla also starred on Dallas and appeared in David Lynch’s 1986 classic Blue Velvet.
Priscilla was also Steven Spielberg‘s mother-in-law for four years during Amy’s marriage to the director, which lasted from 1985 through 1989.
Amy told fans in an April 30 Instagram post that Priscilla “died peacefully in her sleep … hopefully to run off with her 2 adoring husbands and her many dogs. She most definitely will be missed.”

Virginia Giuffre died by suicide at the age of 41, her family confirmed on April 25.
“Virginia lost her life to suicide after enduring a lifetime of sexual abuse and sex trafficking,” her loved ones said in a statement to People. “She was a fierce warrior who fought for survivors everywhere and was the light that lifted so many. Despite everything she faced, she shone so brightly and will be missed beyond measure.”
The family added that Virginia’s children, Christian, Noah and Emily, were the greatest joys of her life.
“It was when she held her newborn daughter in her arms that Virginia realized she had to fight back against those who had abused her and so many others,” they shared. “There are no words to express the loss we feel today. Virginia was heroic and will always be remembered for her courage, love, and spirit. In the end, the toll of abuse was too heavy to bear. We know she is now at peace with the angels.”

Pope Francis died at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke. The Vatican confirmed that the beloved religious leader passed away on April 21 after falling into a coma.
“With deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, shared in a statement. “His entire life was devoted to serving the Lord and spreading love, courage, and compassion to those most in need. We give thanks for his incredible example and pray for his eternal peace.”

Dazed and Confused alum Nicky Katt died at 54 years old on April 8. His death was first confirmed by John Sloss, founder and partner at Sloss Law, the law firm that provided representation for the actor, on April 12, according to Page Six. Two days later, Nicky’s family announced that he had died by suicide.
“Today, with the heaviest of hearts, I share the devastating news of my brother’s passing,” his sister Elise Ravenscroft told Deadline on April 14. “He died by suicide after battling with depression — one that he fought bravely but quietly.”
Elise continued, “This is a pain no family should endure, yet far too many do. Mental illness is real, it is powerful, and it is often invisible. We hope that by sharing this, we can help break the silence and stigma that so often surrounds mental health struggles.”

Former child star Jay North, who was most known for playing Dennis Mitchell in the 1959 sitcom Dennis the Menace, passed away at 73 years old at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, on April 6 after a years-long fight with colon cancer, his longtime friends Jon Provost and Laurie Jacobson confirmed in a Facebook post.
“Jeanne Russell just called us with terribly sad, but not unexpected news,” the post read. “Our dear friend JAY NORTH has been fighting cancer for a number of years and this morning at noon EST, Jay passed peacefully at home.”
The post continued, “As many of his fans know, he had a difficult journey in Hollywood and after … but he did not let it define his life. He had a heart as big as a mountain, loved his friends deeply. He called us frequently and ended every conversation with, ‘I love you with all my heart.’ And we loved him with all of ours. A life-long friend of Jon’s, a brother to Jeanne and a dear friend to me, we will miss him terribly. He is out of pain now. His suffering is over. At last, he is at peace.”

Action movie star Val Kilmer passed away at 65 years old in Los Angeles after a battle with pneumonia on April 1, his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, told The Associated Press. He was surrounded by his family and friends at the time of his passing.

The Thorn Birds star Richard Chamberlain died at 90 years old in Waimānalo, Hawaii, on March 29 due to complications from a stroke, his rep, Harlan Boll, confirmed in a statement to Today. He would have been 91 years old on March 31.
Richard’s “life long partner” and best friend, Martin Rabbett, honored the actor in his own statement. “Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings lifting him to his next great adventure,” Martin said.

Mama Mary Schmucker, a fan favorite from the reality series Breaking Amish, passed away on March 28 at her home after a two-year battle with colon cancer. Her son, Andrew Schmucker, revealed the news to TMZ.

The boxing world lost a legend on March 21 when George Foreman’s family announced that he had died at the age of 76.
“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones,” his family wrote via Instagram. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose. Jack Lilley, known for his role on Little House on the Prairie, died at the age of 91, his costar Melissa Gilbert confirmed on social media.
“The little house family has lost one of our own. Jack Lilley has passed away,” the actress wrote in a touching social media tribute on March 21. “Jack always felt like home to me. He lived quite a life. I am so lucky that he was my friend.”

Prince Frederik, son of Prince Robert, died surrounded by his family after battling POLG Mitochondrial disease. Prince Frederik’s family, on behalf of The POLG Foundation, shared the news of his death on March 8 via Instagram.
In the statement, Prince Robert shared that his late son called his close and distant family members to his room to have one final conversation with them on February 28.
“After gifting each of us with our farewells — some kind, some wise, some instructive — in true Frederik fashion, he left us collectively with a final long-standing family joke,” Prince Robert said. “Even in his last moments, his humour, and his boundless compassion, compelled him to leave us with one last laugh …. to cheer us all up.”

The shocking news of Pamela Bach-Hasselhoff’s death broke on March 6. According to TMZ, authorities responded to her residence on the night of March 5 after receiving a call about an unresponsive woman. Upon arrival, they discovered Pamela, who had passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
David Hasselhoff gave a statement to the outlet.
“Our family is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pamela Hasselhoff,” the former Baywatch star said. “We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time but we kindly request privacy as we grieve and navigate through this challenging time.”

Dolly Parton took to Instagram on March 3 to announce that her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, had died at the age of 82.
“Carl Dean, husband of Dolly Parton, passed away March 3rd in Nashville at the age of 82. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with immediate family attending. He was survived by his siblings Sandra and Donnie,” a statement on her behalf read.
Dolly then shared her own statement, which read, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Superman star Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home after a neighbor requested a welfare check on the couple. The body of their dog was discovered, as well. Authorities stated that no foul play was suspected and Hackman’s daughter Elizabeth Jean Hackman told TMZ that she believed her father had died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025,” the musician’s rep said in a statement. “She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.”

Murder Inc. Records cofounder Irv Gotti’s death at the age of 54 was announced by his family on February 5. The Hollywood Reporter reported he suffered from diabetes-related issues and suffered a series of strokes in recent years but did not give a cause of death.
In addition to his record label, Irv was a music producer who helped create smash hits for such artists as Ja Rule, Jennifer Lopez and Ashanti.
“Surrounded by family and friends, he departed this world, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him and the countless lives he touched,” his family wrote in an Instagram statement. “Our dad was an incredible man, a true visionary who transformed the hip-hop industry and changed the game for artists and fans alike. Music fans were hit with some sad news on January 24 when it was announced that DJ Unk (whose real name was Anthony Platt) had passed away at the age of 43.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we announce the passing of a true ATL legend, Anthony Platt better known as DJ Unk,” the “2 Step” rapper’s former record agency wrote in a message via Instagram. “On behalf of Big Oomp Records and the BOR Family, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the countless fans who were touched by his artistry and spirit.”
The agency’s message continued, “DJ Unk was not just a legendary DJ, rapper and producer, but a true cornerstone of our label and the imprint that he left globally will be cherished forever. Hit songs such as ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ have left an indelible mark on the industry, and his legacy will continue to inspire artists, DJs, and fans alike for years to come. His energy, creativity, and commitment to the craft will never be forgotten.”
Anthony is survived by his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, and their children. No cause of death was given.

Bling Empire: New York alum Lynn Ban died at the age of 51 on January 20, her son, Sebastian, confirmed on January 22. She underwent emergency brain surgery for injuries she sustained in a ski accident one more earlier.
“My mum passed away on Monday. I know she wanted to share her journey after her accident and brain surgery, so I thought she would appreciate one last post sharing the news to people who supported her,” Sebastian wrote alongside a throwback photo of them together. “Many of you followed my mum but never got the chance to know her or meet her in person.”
He added, “She was and always will be my best friend, the best mother to me and someone who cared for all.”

The world lost David Lynch in mid-January and his family revealed his death via Facebook.
“It is with deep regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time,” a Facebook message posted to the Twin Peaks director’s page read on January 16. “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.”
David had revealed he was suffering from emphysema after a lifetime of smoking in 2024 and it was unlikely he would direct or produce any more films. However, a cause of death was not given when his family announced his passing.
David was best known for the unsettling TV show and for his work on films such as Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead.

Paul Danan’s death was announced on January 16.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old,” Independent Creative PR wrote via Instagram. “Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many.”
The message continued, “His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him. During this difficult time, we kindly request respect and privacy for Paul’s family, friends and colleagues.”
Paul was best known for his role as Sol Patrick on the British soap opera Hollyoaks and his time on the first season of Celebrity Love Island.

Longtime General Hospital star Leslie Charleson’s death at the age of 79 was announced by the show’s executive producer on January 12.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson. Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set,” Frank Valenti wrote in an Instagram post.
He added, “On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”
Leslie starred as Dr. Monica Quartermaine on the ABC soap opera from 1977 through 2023, although her character was cut to a recurring status starting in 2010.

Meghan Markle announced on January 7 that her beloved rescue beagle, Guy, had died almost 10 years after she adopted him in 2015.
“Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know,” the Duchess of Sussex wrote in an Instagram tribute.
In December 2024, Guy was included in Prince Harry and Meghan’s holiday card, standing next to their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, as they ran into their parents’ arms.

Former Australian child star Rory Sykes died in the Palisades fire that swept through Pacific Palisades and Malibu, California, in early January.
“It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday. I’m totally heart broken,” Rory’s mom, Shelley Sykes, wrote via X on January 9.
Rory was best known for his role in Kiddy Kapers, a children’s television show in England. Born blind and with cerebral palsy, he went on to work as an inspirational speaker.

Peter Yarrow, the singer-songwriter behind the folk act Peter, Paul and Mary, died at age 86 after a battle with bladder cancer on January 7.
The musician had been battling cancer “for some time,” according to an online message shared by his children, Christopher and Bethany Yarrow, on December 4, 2024.
“He has kept his doctors in awe at his resilience as he has continued to perform and live life in his own generous and cause-driven way,” the pair wrote via Instagram. “It has been a long road and he has been a strong dragon, but right now he is very weak and, at 86, his dragon days are numbered.”
Peter, Paul and Mary were best known for their 1960’s hits including “Day is Done,” “Light One Candle” and “Puff, the Magic Dragon.”

Meredith Vieira‘s husband, Richard Cohen, died on Christmas Eve 2024, but his death wasn’t announced until the January 7 episode of Today by cohosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie.
The former Washington Post columnist revealed to former Today cohost Meredith that he suffered from multiple sclerosis early in their relationship, which began in 1982. The couple wed four years later. In addition to suffering from MS, Richard twice battled cancer in 1999 and 2000 and was declared legally blind. Meredith retired from Today in 2011 to dedicate more time to Richard and their three children.
