The White Lotus’ Jon Gries Teases Gary’s Fate in Season 3: ‘Hope He Has a Good Ending for Me’

With only two episodes left in The White Lotus season 3, fans are clamoring to put together different theories about everything from who’s going to die to who robbed the jewelry store. Viewers won’t know the full story until the season finale, but Jon Gries might have dropped a clue surrounding his character’s fate.

Jon, 67, made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, March 27, and possibly dropped a hint about his character’s fate.

“I hope he …I hope he …you know, has a good ending for me somewhere,” Jon told the late night host. “I dunno, maybe this year, you never know.”

The Napoleon Dynamite star is the only actor to have appeared on all three seasons of Mike White’s dramedy, and as Jimmy, 57, said, Jon started out on the show as “a nice guy named Greg who turned into a bad guy named Gary.” After it was discovered that Greg had a hand in fan-favorite Tanya McQuoid’s (Jennifer Coolidge) death, viewers have had their fingers crossed that he won’t get away with the murder.

In season 3 of The White Lotus, Greg/Gary popped up at the hotel in Thailand and ran into his late wife’s former masseuse Belinda (Natasha Rothwell). When Belinda asked if his name was Greg, he calmly lied and said it was Gary instead. She later learns that Gary is wanted for questioning in Italy, where The White Lotus season 2 took place. To make matters worse, when Belinda attempted to tell the hotel manager that she believed Gary was dangerous, he told her that Gary had been looking for her before brushing off her fears.

Plus, not only does Gary seemingly have it out for Belinda, but two other hotel guests as well. Brothers Saxon and Lochlan Ratliff had a wild night of partying with Gary’s girlfriend, Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon), and he quickly surmised that Chloe slept with at least one of the men. Instead of getting angry, he insisted that she invite them over for dinner, which immediately put her on edge. However, with Gary as the only person viewers are certain is actually a bad person, it seems like him being the killer seems too obvious of a choice.

But even Jon himself admitted he didn’t realize just how unhinged his character was until season 3.

“I somehow equivocated that Greg was remotely involved, but not as deeply involved. But definitely upon looking at season 2 over again, I’m like, ‘Where did I ever come up with that idea?’” Jon told The Wrap in an interview published on March 9. “Mike was walking briskly to get to set … and I saw him, and I ran up to him, and I said, ‘Hey, Greg — psychopath or not?’ And he goes, ‘psychopath’ and walked away. And I went right back into my room and spent the next four hours just writing the story and changing things, and it really gave me something to work with.”

While Gary might be in the running as the yet-unknown killer in The White Lotus season 3, he’s also pretty high up on fans’ lists of who they think might be the victim.

“I hope Greg gets a Mortal Kombat fatality level gruesome death and all of my perfect angels get kissed on the forehead and tucked into bed for a good night’s sleep,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

Another person added, “Greg/Gary. Whether it be death or jail (although death is more likely.) Not just because he sucks, but his villain arc can’t go on forever and would likely be repetitive if it continued into a new season.”
