It's not easy playing someone as iconic as Jackie Kennedy - and Minka Kelly is very aware of that. The actress stars as JFK's wife in the upcoming flick The Butler and explained to Life & Style how nerve-racking it was.
"It was intimidating. It was scary," the brunette beauty, who will be starring in the upcoming Fox series Almost Human, told Life & Style at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday. "It was incredibly humbling and a huge honor. I enjoyed it very much.”
The 33-year-old actress, who's currently dating Captain America star Chris Evans, shared that she did a ton of research while preparing for her role.
“Her integrity, strength and character,” Minka said of what she loves most about Jackie. “I just really respect how she was such a dignified woman.”
The Butler, directed by Lee Daniels, is a drama focusing on an African-American who eyewitnesses notable events of the 20th century during his time as a butler in the White House. The all-star cast includes Mariah Carey, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Forest Whitaker and many others.
Along with mirroring Jackie's personality, Minka also had to match the wardrobe.
“Costumes are such a huge part of whatever character you play and especially this one,” she explained. “These are outfits she actually wore. The outfit that I wear in the scene after the assassination had to be made - I couldn’t fit into the actual clothes from that time. We tried.”
Minka added, “She was quite smaller than me. Women period I think were smaller during that time. It definitely helped me step into that role. You walk a little bit different, you stand a little bit different.”
The Butler hits theaters Aug. 16 – and be sure to check out Minka in her new sci-fi series, Almost Human, on Fox, premiering Nov. 4.
