As If! ‘Clueless’ Stars Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd and More Reunite at C2E2 Panel

The first burning question of the panel was a great one: How did Alicia Silverstone create the role of Cher? “I don’t know, I thought, at first, when I read the script I thought she was really materialistic and annoying. And funny,” the 42-year-old explained. “But then I realized she really loved her dad, and that to try to bring all the heart to it and make all the things that I didn’t like, lovable. You know what I mean?”

“I just say, her script is brilliant and I laughed the whole way through it, it was very funny, just as an actor,” she continued. “I think cause I was like … I had one green T-shirt and a pair of jeans that I wore every single day, so I didn’t understand why someone would care about their clothes, cause I just wasn’t like that, so I had to take the judgment out and then find the love for her in everything she did.”

She also talked a bit about Cher’s extensive wardrobe. “There were 64 costume changes for me, so … costume fittings, and like I said,” she explained the process. “I had the green T-shirt and the jeans and that’s it, so I had no idea why we were doing this, and then when I saw the movie, I was like, Mona May’s a genius, I understand now why we did that, but.”

Cast member Breckin Meyer, who played stoner Travis, admitted to the moderator that the persona was a far cry from who he was off-camera.

“I had never been high,” he revealed. “I had never smoked weed or anything like that when I did Travis, so I was just like, ‘Welp, I’ll steal from Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and I’ll steal from Keanu Reeves in, everything.'”

Everyone, including cast member Donald Faison, who played Murray, wanted to know costar Paul Rudd‘s secret to not aging. “Just tell us already,” Breckin, 44, said at one point.

“I’m 80 years old on the inside,” Paul, 49, joked. “It’s a mess underneath all this. Moisturizer.” Breckin continued the joke. “On the set of Clueless, they would come and they would get us like 20 minutes before set. And then on Paul’s trailer, they would knock like an hour beforehand,” he teased. “Cause he had to finish sucking the lifeblood out of the babies he takes … and then he was camera ready.” Paul didn’t deny it: “Hey, it’s a tough system.”

Paul even addressed a regret he had from filming — and it all has to do with the famous mayo scene. “When I go to the kitchen, and I make the sandwich, I would put the mayonnaise on the bread, and not directly onto the turkey itself,” he said. “A little thing about that is I hate mayonnaise and I hate condiments.”

“And it skeeved me out, so I had never had mayonnaise on a sandwich,” he continued. “I was so nervous with the timing of the scene, I just put the mayonnaise on the turkey. Now, when I see that scene, it’s like nails on a chalkboard.” LOL — it’s OK, Paul. We probably wouldn’t have noticed if you hadn’t said it.
