‘Cobra Kai’ Stars Tanner Buchanan and Mary Mouser Share How They Both Ended Up With Engagement Rings
When Cobra Kai star Tanner Buchanan proposed to girlfriend and costar Mary Mouser, he was surprised to learn that she had purchased an engagement ring one week prior and was already planning to propose to him, he exclusively told Life & Style at PaleyFest L.A. 2025.
“When we talked about just living life, I’d always said, ‘I don’t know why men don’t wear engagement rings,’” the Fuller House alum, 26, said at the March 22 event at Dolby Theatre. “And I’ve always said I’ve always wanted an engagement ring. And just happenstance, a week before I proposed to her, she ordered my engagement ring.”
Sharing her side of the story, Mary, 28, explained that Tanner “is the total romantic out of the two of us.”
“I was like, I don’t know if I’ve made it super clear to Tanner that this is something I would do. This is something I would want,” she continued. “And of course, Tanner jokes that he’s always two steps ahead of me. [He] had already obviously been planning for months to execute the proposal, which was incredible. But all of a sudden, I was like, I should make it super clear that this is something I want. I was like, ‘So, yeah, I went ring shopping.’”
Mary said she tracked down Tanner’s “favorite jeweler in Italy” and went on a “wild goose chase” to have a ring custom-made for her now-fiancé.
“And I thought, ‘Oh, I have all the time in the world for this ring to make it to me in the States before I’m gonna … pop my question.’ And then, lo and behold, a week later,” the Frenemies alum concluded. “And so, as it happened, as he proposed, I was like, ‘Oh.’ And then I literally, I think I said something along the lines of, like, ‘You jerk.’ Like, ‘I have a ring for you, but it’s not ready!’”

Mary and Tanner, who played onscreen exes Samantha LaRusso and Robby Keene in Netflix’s Cobra Kai, surprised fans with the news of their relationship and their engagement by sharing a kiss and showing off their rings at the series finale premiere in Hollywood on February 12. Tanner later announced the engagement via Instagram.
“We’re so happy to finally share that we’re engaged,” he wrote alongside photos of the couple celebrating together before or after the premiere. “This is such a special moment in our lives, the closing of one chapter and celebrating the continuation of another. We’re so grateful for the love and support, and though we’re partial to having our private moments, we’re excited to share this check-in to our world.”
While Tanner wouldn’t share the full details of the proposal with Life & Style, he did explain that it was “something that I had been planning for months and months and months and months, and I was extremely nervous, and we got it pulled off perfectly.”
“Yeah, there was a lot of involved. I figured she’d be onto it, but I got done,” he continued, noting that it was “very private, overseas somewhere.”
Mary and Tanner met while filming season 1 of Cobra Kai in 2018, and they appeared together in all six seasons of the show. Tanner told Life & Style it “means the world” to him that he was able to find “the love of my life” through the project.
“It just works,” he said when asked what makes him and Mary perfect together. “I don’t know how to explain it. We’re just best friends, and that’s my one thing. If you can find your best friend and be best friends first, that’s it. Literally nothing has changed. We’re like, we’re just together, you know, we’re best friends, and now, we just are in a relationship. So that’s great.”
