As Hannah Brown‘s season of The Bachelorette comes to a close, fans have started debating about who should be the next lead on The Bachelor. Contestants like Mike Johnson and Tyler Cameron have been the most popular picks, but what about Jed Wyatt? As one of Hannah’s final three men, he seems like he could be a good pick for the role. After all, on the show, we’ve seen him call out BS, display some impressive musical skills and make at least one woman fall head over heels for him. So does he have what it takes to be the next star of the franchise?

Well, according to Bachelor Nation, it seems like the answer to that question is a big, fat no. Though Jed may have handled himself impressively on this season, he’s been followed by some pretty serious drama offscreen. Back in June, one of Jed’s ex-girlfriends came forward to say that he was still dating her when he started filming Hannah’s season. “We spent the night together the night before he headed to L.A.,” singer-songwriter Haley Stevens said about her fellow musician. “He told me [the show] was just an obstacle and we’d be stronger on the other side because of it.”

Hi y’all. Several of you have reached out with messages and questions. Please know I’m not able to answer right now, but as soon as I’m able to, I will. •Until then, I ask that you please understand how much the actions being taken towards myself, my family, the men on the show, and above all, Hannah, are affecting all of our mental and physical health. •It goes beyond what is said online. Threatening letters and phone calls have been sent to our homes. My parents and sister are being verbally attacked in public. I beg you to remember what seems like a harmless action is damaging to real people. •I want to thank all of you who have reached out or reserved judgement until I am able to speak openly and I can only ask for your patience and kindness until then.

Before heading to the Bachelor mansion, the Nashville resident told his girlfriend that the show is “not real” and that he would be “acting” while he was on it. That may or may have still been the case once he actually met (and potentially started falling for) Hannah, but it’s left a bad taste in fans’ mouths. Though plenty of contestants (and even some fan favorites) were in relationships when they joined the show — or had only very recently dumped a significant other — Jed’s situation seemed different. He wasn’t just keeping someone on the back-burner at home. He had allegedly promised his girlfriend that he’d come back to her after faking a relationship with the Bachelorette so that he could make it to the final five.

As fans have started Twitter campaigns to convince ABC execs to choose #MikeForBachelor, pretty much the opposite has been happening for Jed. As discussions about who should be the next lead started to heat up, one fan tweeted, “If [Hannah] doesn’t pick Jed, there is no way in hell anyone would want him to be the Bachelor. I’m sure that’s why he’s not even being considered.” Another added, “Please God not Jed.”

On July 15, Bachelor in Paradise alum Tanner Tolbert asked fans to vote in a poll about who they’d rather be the next Bachelor: Jed or villain Luke Parker. Though Jed eked out a close first place — 52-percent to Luke P.’s 48 — it wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. “Jed has a girlfriend already,” one fan wrote back. “Even during the show. He went on just for his music. He shouldn’t be considered to be the Bachelor.” Another fan simply responded, “Could we get a few more choices? ‘Cause it’s a hard NO for both of those.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the higher-ups on the show won’t pull rank and choose Jed to be the lead anyway. If the singer-songwriter gets his heart broken by Hannah, he might just find himself in the running. In the past, host Chris Harrison has said they’re not afraid to shy away from controversial choices. In the past, he’s admitted that the lead isn’t always selected based on who would be the best Bachelor — they’re cast based on who would be the best star of The Bachelor.

When Colton Underwood was cast in the leading role, there was a fair amount of fan backlash that neither runner-up Blake Horstmann nor top three finalist Jason Tartick had snagged the role. “Colton, you have to understand, gives us what we felt was the best TV,” the TV show host said in an interview with People. “And that’s what we’re doing; we’re trying to entertain, we’re trying to tell a story. … It could be a complete and utter disaster, which case, it’ll still be phenomenal TV.”

We think fans would agree that Jed as the Bachelor could be a “complete and utter disaster,” but somehow we still think he simply doesn’t have a shot.
