Dylan Dreyer Finally Reveals the Details of Her Separation from Husband Brian Fichera
Dylan Dreyer stopped by Today with Jenna & Friends on Wednesday, November 5 — four months after announcing her separation from husband Brian Fichera.
“I appreciate everyone’s comments and those who have spoken up about my life, our decisions, and what we’ve decided as a family. Thank you for your opinions on that,” the 44-year-old began before opening up about the details of her divorce.
“Everybody has their reasons for what leads to a separation or divorce,” Dreyer explained. “That’s another story — one that probably involves a lot of wine — but either way, we’ve gotten to this place.”
She continued, “There’s something freeing, I think, for Brian and me. Whatever reasons, whatever broke in a marriage — you can try to fix it if you can, and ideally you do. But sometimes, you accept that it’s broken and you take a new step forward.”
The mom of three went on to share that “there was something we couldn’t fix” in their marriage. “We are no longer husband and wife, and all those things that were broken — I don’t hold them against him because we’ve accepted they’re broken.”
“That’s why we’re separated,” she added. “So now we move forward as friends. I’m not mad at the things I used to get mad at because, just like a friend, you give them a little more grace when you’re not married to them. I can be a better friend than a wife.”
The couple shares three kids together, Cal, 8, Ollie, 5, and Rusty, 4. Dreyer also opened up about how she and Brian approached the topic of divorce with their children.
“We even talked to the kids about it. I asked Calvin, ‘What do you think a family is?’ And he said, ‘It’s a group of people that love each other.’ And I said, ‘That’s exactly what we are. We’ll always be that for you. But Mommy and Daddy work better as friends than as husband and wife.’”
She concluded, “He doesn’t care about a title — none of them do. They’re surrounded by love every single day.”
Dreyer also opened up about the heartbreak and how she’s been finding her strength through it.
“I’ve relied on my faith more than anything,” she shared. “There’s something really comforting about knowing there’s a higher power holding my hand every day.”
The Today meteorologist announced her divorce via Instagram on July 18 with a caption that read, “For many years, I have shared my family with you all — the highs and lows, the ups and downs, and all of the blessings and beautiful memories in between.”
“I am incredibly grateful for the support and love you’ve given me through it all. For that reason, I want to share with you that a few months ago, Brian and I made the decision to separate,” she continued.
“We began as friends, and we will remain the closest of friends. Most importantly, we will continue to co-parent our three wonderful boys together with nothing but love and respect for one another. Thank you as always for your support.”
