Gigi Hadid Makes Rare Comment About Coparenting With Zayn Malik: We ‘Have Each Other’s Backs’

Gigi Hadid made a rare comment about her coparenting dynamic with ex Zayn Malik and shared that their main focus is their daughter.

“Zayn and I do our custody schedules months in advance,” Gigi, 29, told Vogue in an interview published on Tuesday, March 11. “That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t change here and there, but we help each other out and have each other’s backs.”

Gigi first confirmed she was expecting a child with Zayn, 32, during an interview with Jimmy Fallon in April 2020. The former couple later welcomed their daughter, Khai, in September 2020.

While speaking to Vogue, Gigi explained that she and Zayn have come to a point in their relationship that’s full of “love and a feeling of camaraderie.”

Not only did she share an update about where she stands with Zayn, while Gigi also opened up about accepting the highs and lows of coparenting in the spotlight.

“There is the hard part of the world knowing this much, and thinking they know everything,” she said. “And at the end of the day, we’re not interested in giving everyone our whole story. What we are interested in is raising our daughter together, with so much respect for each other and not just as coparents, but what we’ve been through together.”

Gigi and Zayn – who began their on and off relationship in 2015 – called it quits in October 2021 following an alleged altercation between Zayn and Gigi’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, in which he allegedly shoved her during a verbal argument. The former One Direction member denied accusations of striking Yolanda, and he pleaded no contest to four counts of summary harassment.

In October 2024, an insider exclusively told Life & Style that Gigi had forgiven Zayn since their nasty split.

“They obviously went through a horrible breakup, but they’ve worked through things for the sake of their daughter and are getting along really well again,” the source said about the former couple. “Zayn has really mellowed out. He’s done so much growing up and is in a much better place now, mentally and emotionally. It’s such a relief for everyone in his life, especially Gigi.”

The insider added that Gigi will “always have a special place in her heart for” Zayn and she “has totally forgiven him for what he put her through.”

“She’s really impressed with all the work he’s done on himself and raves about what a great daddy he is to Khai,” the source shared.

Meanwhile, Zayn previously discussed the alleged incident with Yolanda while appearing on a July 2023 episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “I don’t tend to get involved when people say things online, whether it’s got something to do with me or whether it doesn’t. Because for me, my most valuable thing that I have in life is time, and that takes so much time,” he told host Alex Cooper at the time. “In a toxic environment to, like, explain yourself to people and justify this. And so I just kind of keep to myself.”

“I knew what the situation was, I knew what happened and the people involved knew what happened, too. And that’s all I really cared about,” Zayn continued. “If anybody, you know, of a sane mind would look at the situation, I believe that you could respect that.”
