Just three days after Kat Von D’s son Leafar was born, the famed tattoo artist took to Instagram to share an emotional new video about her struggles with breastfeeding.  “During the first two days of Leafar’s life, his blood sugar and count had been low, and as much as I had committed to strictly breastfeed, my milk hadn’t come in yet,” the 36-year-old began.

“The pediatrician suggested asking around to see if any friends might have a bit of extra milk they could donate — and if not, I’d have to consider supplementing with formula — something we personally did not want to do,” Kat continued. “I called my beloved midwife, [Sara Howard], to see if she knew anyone who might be willing to share a bit of their breastmilk who was on a plant-based diet, as that was crucial to us.”

During the first two days of Leafar’s life, his blood sugar count had been low, and as much as I had committed myself to strictly breastfeed, my milk hadn’t come in yet. The pediatrician suggested asking around to see if any friends might have a bit of extra milk they could donate – and if not, I’d have to consider supplementing with formula – something we personally did not want to do. I called my beloved midwife, @losangelesmidwife to see if she knew anyone who might be willing to share a bit of their breastmilk who was on a plant-based diet, as that was crucial to us, and she quickly connected me with @mattersofmotherhood who, without even knowing me, and without question, stepped up and donated a few ounces to us in the middle of the night. Needless to say, Leafar’s levels boosted, and we are now happily breastfeeding at home. Can’t thank @mattersofmotherhood enough for getting us through those rough nights with your donation. This is true community. True sisterhood. True kindness. And I can’t wait to pay it forward one day soon. 🖤

The inked-up mom went on to explain that her midwife was able to connect her to an organization called Matters of Motherhood and they were able to provide Leafar with the “few ounces” of breastmilk he needed. Thankfully, Kat’s little man immediately showed positive results. “Leafar’s levels boosted, and we are now happily breastfeeding at home,” she wrote.

Despite Kat’s somewhat unconventional views — back in June she revealed that she would not be vaccinating her child — many new and expectant mothers flocked to her page to show their love and support. “Don’t give up… even on the hard days! It’s all worth it, I promise. Much love to you and yours,” one fan wrote. “What a beautiful, precious moment. Thank you for sharing. It means more than you know,” added another.

We’re so happy to hear that Leafar is getting the nutrients he needs… straight from his mama’s body! We can’t wait to see more pictures of him in the future.
