Kate Hudson Says Mom Goldie Hawn ‘Always Taught Her to Follow Her Heart’: Inside Their Bond
When Kate Hudson was a teen, her famous mother, Goldie Hawn, advised the natural blonde not to dye her mane. “But I didn’t listen,” Kate, 45, recently told InStyle. “I started coloring it at 16 and she was very frustrated because she loved my OG color of my hair. She’s like, ‘You’re never gonna get it back.’ And she’s right. She was right.” There’s a lot of other advice from Goldie that Kate did heed, though — and it’s helped make the Running Point actress who she is today. “They have a very special relationship. Kate has modeled her life after Goldie’s in so many ways, from her career to her lifestyle choices,” an insider exclusively tells Life & Style. “Kate says Goldie always taught her to follow her heart and to believe in herself, even when others doubted her.”
Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn Have a Close Bond
Indeed, Goldie, 79, instilled values Kate tries to pass along to her own kids — Ryder, 21, Bingham, 13 , and Rani, 6. “It starts with my mom,” Kate told PopSugar. “Because of her personality , but also because her spirituality, she’s very open to change and can go with the ebbs and flows of life. She is a searcher herself.”
Goldie encouraged Kate and her brothers, Oliver Hudson, 48, and Wyatt Russell, 38, to have “experiences.” “We’d all go on these journeys,” Kate continued. “We’d come back and we’d have all these stories to tell.”Despite fame and fortune, Goldie worked hard to keep her kids grounded. “My mom wasn’t a big shopper for us,” Kate dished to Harper’s Bazaar. “[She] wanted to instill that in us even though we grew up … really privileged.”
The Overboard star helped form her daughter’s views on romance, too. She had short marriages to Gus Trikonis and Kate’s dad, Bill Hudson, before finding lasting love with Kurt Russell, 74, in 1983. When it comes to matters of the heart, Kate — who’s been engaged to Danny Fujikawa, 38, since 2021 — told ET her mother advised: “Be true to yourself. When you’re connected intimately it’s a huge time of growth, so accept what that is and go there even when it’s uncomfortable.”
As for Kate learning how to coparent with the baby daddies of her two eldest children? Her mother’s led by example there, too. “No matter what, I never heard a bad word about my father,” Kate marveled on the “Divorce Sucks!” podcast. It’s thanks to Goldie that Kate’s built a vast network of supportive gal pals, as well. “My mom once said … ‘Honor your female friendships, because men can come and go,’” she told Self.
No matter what the future holds, lucky Kate is never far from her mother’s wisdom. She told PopSugar: “I pretty much talk to her every day!”
