ExclusiveMadelaine Petsch Breaks Down Cheryl and Toni’s ‘Riverdale’ Romance With IRL Bestie Vanessa Morgan
Turns out, making out with your bestie onscreen isn’t as awkward as you’d think! At least that’s what Riverdale star Madelaine Petsch a.k.a. Cheryl Blossom tells Life & Style about her steamy romance with Vanessa Morgan a.k.a Toni Topaz on the hit CW drama. “It’s way better than playing it with a stranger. I’ll tell you that much,” Madelaine explained while promoting her Privé Revaux M3 Collection launching on May 27.
“You know where their mouth has been for one. It’s easy. It’s like you can choreograph your love scenes. Everything’s fun. It’s really easy going. It’s honestly a really great collaborative thing because you feel comfortable with that person,” she gushed. Considering “Choni” shippers are some of the most diehard Riverdale fans around, it’s clear that the pair’s chemistry is believable.
The best part? It doesn’t negatively affect Madelaine and Vanessa IRL friendship. “We’ll make out on screen for, like, 30 minutes and I’ll be like, ‘Want to go watch a movie?’ It’s just separating, it’s like, well, I’m Cheryl and she’s Toni. So, in that moment we are in love,” the 24-year-old expressed. “Then, when it’s over, we’re best friends again cause we’re Madelaine and Vanessa.”
Thankfully, these talented ladies have been able to conduct themselves with ease ever since finding out about playing onscreen lovers. “We texted each other immediately. Well, actually, it’s funny because Vanessa saw a tweet of a fan who kind of caught on to it really early on before we even got a script,” Madelaine recalled.
“I guess it’s something that Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] had laid seeds for, because he’s always doing that, our showrunner. And a fan was like, ‘Oh my God, I think Toni and Cheryl are gonna date’ and I sent it to Roberto, being like, ‘Ha ha. Like what do you think?’ Because I knew Cheryl was a lesbian. And he was like, ‘Oh, lady, dot, dot, dot.’ And I’m like, ‘What does that mean?'” she continued.
“And then I sent it to her and then when we got the script, like the next script, we’re like, YAAASSS, we were so excited. Of course, we want to bring that representation to television. There’s no better person to do it with than your best friend.”
