Clearly, The Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) has someone on his mind! According to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) website, the hip-hop artist recently registered a song called “Like Selena” — most likely referring to his ex Selena Gomez — and he is listed as a writer and performer on the upcoming track.
The 29-year-old — who dated the 27-year-old pop star from January 2017 to October 2017 — recently got fans excited for some new music as he wiped his Instagram clean and uploaded a black-and-white photo on Monday, November 25, writing, “The fall starts tomorrow night.” The Canada native also shared two snaps on his Instagram Stories — one appears to be the same photo from his Instagram page with the caption, “Tomorrow night we start again,” and then a photo of his 2016 album, Starboy.
Of course, The Weeknd’s followers can hardly contain their excitement about the new beats. One person wrote, “Patiently waiting for The Weeknd to drop his music,” while another echoed, “The Weeknd is coming out with new music, and I can’t wait to be in my feels.” A third person chimed in, writing, “STILL REFRESHING APPLE MUSIC SINCE YESTERDAY.”
However, this wouldn’t be the first time the singer has seemingly referenced Selena. In March 2018, The Weeknd released “Call Out My Name,” and fans immediately thought certain lyrics were about the Disney alum. “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life / Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Till you made up your mind / You just wasted my time,” he sings. Some people thought he was referring to Selena’s kidney transplant and how she got back with Justin Bieber shortly after calling it quits with The Weeknd.
After The Weeknd and Selena split, the Grammy winner rekindled his romance with Bella Hadid — the two previously dated from 2015 until 2016 — but they ultimately parted ways in August 2019. But the “Lose You to Love Me” songstress and the model, 23, had a bit of an awkward social interaction in mid-November after Selena wrote a sweet comment on Bella’s photo. The Washington D.C. native then deleted Selena’s entire post, including the remarks. “That sucks,” the brunette babe wrote with a crying emoji after Bella made it clear how she felt.
Later on, the Spring Breakers actress seemed like she had some regrets on sharing her thoughts. “NO. I shouldn’t [have] spoken without knowing the truth. I’m sorry. Please don’t be hurtful,” she wrote in another comment. “She is a wonderful person, and it was all a misunderstanding.”
Ultimately, it seems like Bella can’t move past the fact that Selena dated her ex. “Selena’s upset that Bella still holds a grudge against her. Yes, she hooked up with The Weeknd while the model was still with him, but that was years ago,” a source told In Touch. “Bella sees things differently though — Selena broke girl code, which is not cool.”
The insider added, “While Bella’s no longer dating The Weeknd, they’ve remained friends and her feelings for him aren’t going to disappear overnight — they have a long history together. She worries that Selena wants to rekindle the romance, especially as she’s been single for a while, but it’s not the case.”
Well, it seems like Bella won’t be happy about The Weeknd’s new song title! Welp.
