FOX
L.A. to Vegas (Jan. 2, FOX)
Everyone knows how wacky it is to fly these days, and this show will undoubtedly be tapping into all of that…uh, magic. The network describes it as a "workplace comedy about an airline crew and the eccentric passengers who, every weekend, take the roundtrip flight from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with one goal in mind — to come back a winner. It won’t be easy, but this unlikely group of miscreants and dreamers will eventually go from being strangers on a plane to a supportive, if unconventional, family…well, at least from Friday to Sunday." Maybe it'll be like The Love Boat, but without any of the luxuries, the theme song, or Isaac behind the bar. Among the cast are Kim Matula, Ed Weeks, and, starring as your pilot, Dylan McDermott.

Counterpart (Jan. 21, Starz)
An espionage, sci-fi thriller with a metaphysical twist, Counterpart tells the story of Howard Silk (J.K. Simmons), a lowly cog in a bureaucratic UN agency who is turning the last corner of a life filled with regret. But then he discovers the agency he works for is guarding a secret: a crossing to a parallel dimension. Through Howard and his “counterpart” on the other side, the show will navigate themes of identity, idealism, what ifs, and lost love. In some ways, it sounds like it taps into themes previously explored on the excellent series Fringe. Plus, you can't go wrong with J.K. Simmons. Those Farmers Insurance commercials are awesome…. We kid. The man's an Academy Award winner and deservedly so. But for the record, those commercials are fun.

The Alienest (Jan. 22, TNT)
When we heard the title The Alienest, it sounded like the latest in those sci-fi films with those chest-bursting creatures. Then it was pointed out to us that it's actually a psychological thriller based on the Caleb Carr novel and set in 1896 New York amidst a backdrop of vast wealth, extreme poverty and technological innovation. As things begin, a series of haunting, gruesome murders of boy prostitutes grips New York City. Newly appointed police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt (Brian Geraghty) calls upon criminal psychologist (aka alienist) Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (David Brühl) and newspaper illustrator John Moore (Luke Evans) to conduct the investigation in secret. They are joined by Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), a headstrong secretary determined to become the city's first female police detective. Using the emerging disciplines of psychology and early forensic investigation techniques, this band of social outsiders set out to find and apprehend one of New York City's first serial killers. Despite the absence of actual aliens, we're definitely intrigued.

Let’s Get Physical (Jan. 24, Pop)
Although it's set today, there's definitely an '80s influence on this aerobics-based comedy. The network says this show is "paying homage to the decade that introduced America to scrunchies, leg warmers and Footloose." It centers on a slacker named Joe, who makes a reluctant comeback in the fitness industry after his dad, Colonel Tom Force, a.k.a. “The Godfather of Aerobics,” unexpectedly passes away and wills his son the broken-down family gym. To receive the family fortune and estate, Joe must take on his arch-nemesis, who has become a highly successful fitness entrepreneur. Against all odds, they face off in the ultimate battle of masculinity —The National Aerobics Championships.
