What Is ‘Debutation’? Breaking Down the Taylor Swift Fan Theory About Her Next Rerecorded Albums

Ever since Taylor Swift announced she was rerecording her first five albums, fans have anxiously been waiting for her to release Taylor’s Version of their favorite albums. With only her 2006 self-titled debut album, Taylor Swift, and her 2017 album, Reputation, left to be released, the term “Debutation” has circulated online. What is the “Debutation” and what have fans said about the theory?

What Is ‘Debutation’?

Many fans have speculated that Taylor will drop both her rerecordings of her debut album and Reputation at the same time, which is how the term “Debuation” came to be.

Has Taylor Swift Addressed the ‘Debutation’ Theory?

While many social media users have discussed the theory online, Taylor has not directly addressed it. However, she seemingly dropped many hints confirming the theory during the final leg of her Eras tour.

Who Is Your Favorite Collaborator on Taylor Swift’s TTPD?

One example of Taylor playing into the theory has been her choice of surprise songs. During the second half of the tour, she has been mashing up songs during the surprise acoustic set section. While performing in Miami on October 19, 2024, she mashed up her 2006 song “Should’ve Said No” with “I Did Something Bad” from Reputation. Meanwhile, she did another mashup of debut and Reputation songs by singing “Our Song” and “Call It What You Want” during her October 25, 2024, concert in New Orleans.

Other shows in October 2024 didn’t include mashups specifically made up of debut and Reputation songs, though she made sure to include tracks from the albums in her surprise song set rotation by singing “Tim McGraw” in Miami and “Dress” in New Orleans.

Another clue that has fans convinced that Taylor will release her debut album and Reputation together has come from her new costumes during the recent shows. Not only did she switch the bodysuit she wears during the Reputation set for the first time the entire tour in Miami, but she also has been wearing new teal costumes in other sections of the show. The color is meaningful because it is often associated with the debut era.

Taylor has also been wearing new dresses for the surprise song section, which she acknowledged during her October 18, 2024, show. “I got a new dress for you and everything,” she told the crowd while wearing a pink and teal gown. “I love that you guys notice these things, it’s the most rewarding thing in the world.”

What Albums Has Taylor Swift Rerecorded?

The first album that Taylor rerecorded was Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in April 2021. She went on to release Red (Taylor’s Version) in November 2021, followed by Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) in July 2023 and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in October 2024.

In addition to rerecording the songs featured on the original albums, Taylor has also included tracks that didn’t make the final cut on the original albums on the Taylor’s Versions.

When she announced 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in August 2023, she said that the album was her “most FAVORITE re-record” she’s “ever done because the 5 From The Vault tracks are so insane.”

“I can’t believe they were ever left behind,” she added at the time.
