Who Is Blue Ivy Carter in ‘Mufasa’? Inside Beyonce and Jay-Z’s Oldest Daughter’s Feature Film Debut

All eyes were on Blue Ivy Carter at the premiere of Mufasa. The preteen looked all grown up on the December 9, 2024, red carpet, which she walked solo before being joined by parents Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Blue’s shining moment had fans wondering what her role in the upcoming Disney movie is.

Who Is Blue Ivy in ‘Mufasa’?

Blue Ivy voices Princess Kiara in the photorealistically-animated movie. Kiara is the daughter of Simba and Nala, who fans know from The Lion King, which was originally traditionally-animated in 1994 and remade in 2019 with photorealistic animation.

In Mufasa, Kiara is told the origin story of her grandfather Mufasa, who (SPOILER ALERT!) died in The Lion King.

“If I, like, told myself that I was in a movie, I’d, like, never believe myself,” Blue admitted on Good Morning America, as her mom was moved to tears. “It’s just a really amazing experience and I feel like everybody that’s a part of this is so helpful and so supportive.”

What Is the ‘Mufasa’ Movie About?

Mufasa is both a sequel and prequel to The Lion King. The story takes place after the events of The Lion King, with Rafiki telling Simba and Nala’s daughter Mufasa’s story before he became the king of the Pride Lands.

As Kiara hears the retelling, the film flashes back to Mufasa’s upbringing, particularly following the story of his relationship with another lion named Taka, who later becomes the villainous Scar. Mufasa befriends Taka and is adopted by his family, leading the two lions to become close like brothers before their eventual falling out over the title of king.

Who Is Beyonce in the ‘Mufasa’ Movie?

Beyoncé voices Nala in Mufasa, reprising her role from The Lion King. Back in 2019, she opened up about how enthusiastic she was to share the movie with her family (in addition to Blue, she and Jay share twins Rumi and Sir).

“I’m so excited for my kids to see it,” Bey gushed. “But it means even more to share this experience and this culture of The Lion King with my mother and my family.”

Beyoncé won the Best Music Video Grammy for her song “Brown Skin Girl,” which was featured on the 2019 soundtrack The Lion King: The Gift. Since Blue Ivy starred in the video, she also won a Grammy at the 2021 awards ceremony, making her the second-youngest person to ever take home one of the coveted awards. She was just 9 years old at the time.

‘Mufasa’ Movie Cast

Many cast members from The Lion King are reprising their roles in Mufasa. Donald Glover is back as the voice of Simba, while Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen return to voice Timon and Pumbaa, respectively. Plus, John Kani is back as Rafiki.

While Mufasa was voiced by James Earl Jones in The Lion King, Aaron Pierre is taking on the role in the prequel, with Braelyn Rankins voicing young Mufasa. Chiwetel Ejiofor voiced Scar in The Lion King, but Taka will be portrayed by Kelvin Harrison Jr., with Theo Somolu voicing the younger version.
