Who Is Jerrod Carmichael? Meet Comedian Who Sat With Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at Yankees Game
A new squaddie? Fans want to know more about comedian Jerrod Carmichael after he sat with Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to watch the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians’ ALCS game on October 14, 2024.
What Does Jerrod Carmichael Do for a Living?
Jerrod is a comedian and actor. After working as a standup comedian, he got his big break playing the small but memorable role of Garf in the 2014 film Neighbors, starring Zac Efron and Seth Rogan.
The same year, Jerrod’s first comedy special, Jerrod Carmichael: Love at the Store, debuted on HBO. It was directed by film icon Spike Lee and shot at West Hollywood’s legendary Comedy Store. Jerrod tackled race, wealth and national tragedies including 9/11 and the Boston Marathon bombing.
The special led to the North Carolina native landing his own self-titled sitcom, The Carmichael Show, which aired on NBC for three seasons starting in 2015. The series starred Lil Rel Howery, Tiffany Haddish, Loretta Devine and David Alan Grier as characters loosely based on Jerrod’s own family members.
Jerrod’s second HBO comedy special, titled 8, premiered in 2017. This time it was directed by actor-director Bo Burnham and showed Jerrod’s growth as a stand-up comedian. His third comedy special, Rothaniel, premiered on the cable network in 2022.
The comic’s most recent project was Max’s Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, which premiered on March 29, 2024. Jerrod described it to Esquire in an April 1, 2024, interview as “a raw, uncensored, hilarious look into my complicated relationship with my homophobic family, my insane sex life, and my unlikely best friend.”
Jerrod Carmichael Came Out as Gay in 2022’s ‘Rothaniel’
In Rothaniel, Jerrod officially came out to audiences after discussing how he had carried the weight of the secret about his sexuality for his entire life.
Jerrod told a story about his father cheating on his mother, going on to reveal, “After that was out in the open, I was left alone feeling like a liar, because I had a secret. One that I kept from my father, my mother, my family, my friends, and you. Professionally, personally. And the secret is that I’m gay.”
After receiving a wildly warm reception from the audience, Jerrod went on to say, “I’m accepting the love, I really appreciate the love. My ego wants to rebel against it. I rebelled against it my whole life. I never thought I’d come out. I didn’t think I’d ever, ever, ever come out. Probably at many points I thought I’d rather die than confront the truth of that, to actually say it to people. Because I know it changes people’s — some people — it changes their perception of me. I can’t control that.”
Jerrod Carmichael Is an Emmy Winner
Rothaniel landed Jerrod a Prime Time Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special in 2022.
Jerrod Carmichael and Taylor Swift’s Friendship
It’s unclear exactly how the pair met, but Jerrod was also with Taylor in her suite at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, as they watched Travis and his Kansas City Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills on January 21, 2024, to advance in the NFL playoffs.
During a March 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host showed a photo of the duo watching the game together and Jerrod responded, “Taylor Swift’s my best friend. Like, I’m not her best friend, but she’s my best friend.”
He went on to joke, “Can you think of a better friend to have than Taylor Swift? I called my former best friend and I was like, ‘You’re out. Taylor’s in. You never invited me on a jet to your game.'”
