The tiny town of Riverdale has had a rough few years…to say the least. We saw Clifford Blossom murder his own son in Season 1, Hal Cooper kill a whole bunch of people in Season 2, and now there’s some seriously weird creature terrorizing the city’s teenagers. Not-so-affectionately named the Gargoyle King, this mysterious woodland creature is wreaking havoc in Season 3. Who is the Gargoyle King on Riverdale? Fans think they’ve figured it out.

The Gargoyle King, a character that you would think is a fictitious monster from the game Gryphons and Gargoyles (G&G), is apparently very real. Audiences learned that it has been roaming around since Betty’s mom and the rest of the parents were teens. The fact that Archie’s jailhouse fight club was the less interesting storyline should say something. The Gargoyle King could possibly be behind the murders of Principal Featherhead, Dilton Doiley, Ben Button, and Warden Norton. The biggest question remains: What character is most likely to dress up in twigs and roam around the woods at night? Hmmm, let’s dive in.

One fan theory on Reddit claims that the town mayor and Veronica’s mom, Hermoine Lodge, could be the one behind it. She’s the one who bans G&G which, Veronica pointed out, just makes it more appealing for the kids to play. The Lodge family is also skilled at manipulation, which is the main source of power for the game.

During the flashback episode, Hermoine was the one who encouraged the others to take Harim’s drugs which makes the events from the evening fuzzy. The Redditor also pointed out that Betty’s mom, Alice Cooper, found the cups of (what’s assumed to be) cyanide in the women’s bathroom, where she and Hermoine had a previous conversation. Most importantly, it’s clear that Hermoine has an agenda up her sleeve this season, but it has not been made clear what that exactly is. This keeps her open for some Gargoyle madness.

This all sounds very convincing, but there are a lot of holes in the theory. So much so that the Redditor admitted that this idea is a stretch. First of all, We’re not seeing Hermoine dressing up like a woodland monster and parading around town. She could be paying someone to do her dirty work, but that also means she would have hired someone back when they were teens. It was made clear that she did not come from wealth so this seems unlikely. She is married to Hiram who, it’s been alluded to, has killed some people, but there is no reason to believe that Hermoine is also a murderer. Finally, both Cheryl and Betty’s dad turned out to be murderers, it would be crazy if yet another Riverdale parent within the same friend group was also a killer. However, it’s obviously someone close to the inner circle, but Hermoine is tough to fully connect to this crime.

The storyline is certainly going to unravel more in the next few weeks. Buckle in, it’s probably going to be a very bumpy ride.
