Friends supporting each other! Ariana Grande took to her Instagram Story on Monday, August 26, to show Miley Cyrus some love for her emotional performance at the 2019 Video Music Awards.

“I love you. I love this beautiful song and your heart and this beautiful performance,” Ari, 26, captioned a now-deleted photo of the Disney alum, also 26, singing her heart out to “Slide Away.” In a second photo, the “God Is a Woman” crooner wrote, “Sing, my stunning friend,” and tagged Miley.

This was the first time Miley performed the tune, which was inspired by her recent breakup with Liam Hemsworth, according to the heartfelt lyrics: “Once upon a time/ It was paradise/ Once upon a time/ I was paralyzed/ Think I’m gonna miss these harbor lights/ But it’s time to let it go.”

News that the former couple split broke on August 10. On August 21, Liam filed for divorce, which seemed to have blindsided Miley. She “is shocked and hurt that Liam filed for divorce so quickly,” a source revealed to In Touch. “While she’s moved on, she expected him to wait so they could both make the decision together. The bottom line is, Liam has had enough of Miley’s attention-seeking ways and wants out.”

It seems that many speculated cheating was the cause of Miley and Liam’s breakup, especially after she was seen getting cozy with Kaitlynn Carter, but Miley made sure to set the record straight. In a series of tweets, the “Wrecking Ball” singer owned up to her past mistakes, admitting “she f–ked up and cheated in relationships” when she was younger. However, that wasn’t the case with the Australian native, 29, according to her.

“I can admit to a lot of things, but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating,” she wrote. “Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before, and it remains true, I love Liam and always will.”

It’s a good thing Miley has the support of good friends like Ariana. Unfortunately, Ari was unable to attend the VMAs because she’s currently touring in Europe. Despite the fact that she wasn’t present, she was there in spirit — the chart-topper won Artist of the Year. Congrats, girl!
