Chris Martin Reacts After Falling Through a Trap Door on Stage During Coldplay Concert
Chris Martin almost saw a sky full of stars when he fell through a trap door while on stage at a Coldplay concert in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday, November 3.
In the video, Chris, 47, was conversing with the fans on the floor level of the crowd while walking backward. Not knowing there was an open entrance from the bottom of the stage floor, the lead singer stepped into it and fell a shallow distance.
“That’s, uh, not planned,” Chris said into the mic, while being lifted back onto the stage by the stage crew located inside the opening. “Thank you for catching me, so much. Thank you, guys. Holy s–t, that was nearly a YouTube moment.”
Rather than being heated about the oversight, the Grammy-winning artist continued to thank the staff for saving his fall. While a technician fixed Chris’ mic box, he assured the worried crowd that he was OK. Once everything was squared away, Chris pointed down at the staff, joking, “You get a bonus! You get a bonus!”

Chris and his Coldplay bandmates, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion, have exuded light and positivity into the world since the release of their debut studio album, Parachutes, in 2000. After more than two decades of touring the nation and performing on the most honorary stages, the band will soon take their final bow.
“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise,” the “Fix You” artist said during the October 1 episode of “The Zane Lowe Show” podcast. “Because less is more and, for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important that we have that limit.”
Coldplay performed on the Today show one week later while promoting their 10th studio album Moon Music. After the band woke up the streets of New York City with their new tunes, Today show cohosts Hoda Kotb, Savannah Guthrie, Carson Daly, Craig Melvin and Al Roker chatted with Chris about the band’s constant success over the years. During their chat, Hoda, 60, asked Chris if he was serious that Coldplay will retire after their 12th album.
“Aren’t you retiring soon?” Chris quipped back to Hoda, 60, who recently announced her own plans to leave the NBC Morning Show in 2025. The England native also joked that he and Hoda agreed to retire and bake cookies, smoothly dodging the question.
When speaking about Moon Music, Chris shared that the project was the band’s “take on how to stay positive in the face of all the negatives that come at us individually and collectively.”
During a different part of the interview, Carson, 51, highlighted that Chris’ kids, Apple and Moses Martin, were credited on the album’s song “feelslikeimfallinginlove” and asked the proud dad what it feels like to embark on the creative journey together. Chris shares his children with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow.
“I think, with all of our kids, it’s lovely that they don’t think we’re too bad,” Chris said with a giggle. “They really help us a lot and show us new things.”
