‘MAFS’ Star Jamie Otis Suffers ‘Failed Miscarriage’ 2 Weeks After Pregnancy Announcement
Our hearts are breaking for Married At First Sight alum Jamie Otis, who announced on Jan. 11 that she had suffered from a “failed miscarriage.” She and her MAFS husband, Doug Hehner, had recently announced their third pregnancy on Dec. 27.
“So thankful for this little one and her daddy. Our doc appointment didn’t go well today. 😢,” she captioned a photo of her snuggling with their daughter, 16-month-old Henley, posted to her Instagram. “I’m devastated. We’ve had a ‘failed miscarriage.’ Our baby formed and there was an amniotic sac, but while the amniotic sac continued to grow the baby stopped at some point.”
Jamie also explained the medical advice she was given: “We had three options. 1) Wait for my body to miscarry our baby naturally. 2) Go to the hospital and have a D&C [dilation and curettage]. 3) Take medication to help my body miscarry quicker.”
The D&C procedure Jamie refers to is called “dilation and curettage,” which would allow a doctor to dilate the cervix upon a first-trimester miscarriage and scrape the contents of the uterus.
“I really don’t want to have to go to the OR and have a D&C for obvious reasons,” the 32-year-old continued in her caption about the potential for having an invasive procedure. “I’d love for my body to just naturally take the proper course, but since we don’t know how long that would take and since there’s a small risk for infection I opted to take the medicine and hope and pray it works so I don’t have to have a D&C.”
The news of Jamie’s miscarriage is particularly devastating, as the couple’s pregnancy announcement was not only filled with joy, but also quite recent. “So excited to finally share the news that we’re PREGNANT,” she captioned a series of two Instagram vids with the couple’s original announcement on Dec. 27. “I also want to be sensitive to all the mama’s who have been [trying to conceive] but are struggling. The road to conception wasn’t easy for us and I know there’s [an] involuntary pain that sneaks up on you when it seems like everyone and their sister is getting pregnant but you.”
The couple, who got married in March 2014 after meeting on Married At First Sight, have been vocal in the past about their notorious difficulties getting pregnant. Jamie suffered a devastating miscarriage back in July 2016, losing a son named Johnathan. Back in September, the reality star revealed that she had a previous early miscarriage due to a chemical pregnancy.
We are sending the utmost love and support to Jamie and Doug — we can only imagine what a trying time this must be for them and their sweet family.
