Sandra Bullock Got Closer to Keanu Reeves After Death of Bryan Randall: Their Bond Is ‘Stronger’
Sandra Bullock recalls the first time she met Keanu Reeves during her audition for Speed. “There was a paper plate,” the actress shared on October 8 in L.A. at a 30th-anniversary screening of the blockbuster — in which she plays a city bus passenger who is forced to take over driving as Keanu’s cop character attempts to disarm a bomb that had been planted onboard. “That was the steering wheel.”
During the same event, Sandra went on to remind Keanu that there were three actresses he encountered first — who all passed on the role — before she even auditioned. “I don’t remember that,” he said dismissively, eliciting a big grin from Sandra. “That,” she gleefully told the audience, “is why I love him.”
It marked a rare and joyful night out for Sandra, who’s kept a low profile in recent years. In 2022, she announced she was taking a break from Hollywood to focus more on her children, Louis, 15, and Laila, 11. In 2023, she mourned her partner of eight years, photographer Bryan Randall, who died at 57 following a secret three-year battle with the progressive neurodegenerative disease ALS.
“Sandra and Keanu got even closer after Bryan’s passing. They stayed in touch while he was alive, but now they talk more often,” a source exclusively tells Life & Style. Indeed, more than three decades after they first connected, their beautiful friendship endures. “They’ve always had a special bond,” confirms the source, “and it’s even stronger now.”
Sparks Flew Between Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves
They clicked right away. While making Speed, “I felt very comfortable with Keanu,” Sandra said during a podcast appearance with her old pal in May, calling their onscreen chemistry “electric.”
The stars, both 60, have also confessed that their chemistry wasn’t just acting. In 2018, Sandra admitted that it was “hard to be serious” on the Speed set because “sweet” and “handsome” Keanu “would look at me and I’d [giggle].”
He felt butterflies, too. “She obviously didn’t know I had a crush on her,” Keanu said in 2019, explaining that he didn’t cross the line because they had a job to do. However, he noted, knowing Sandra was there, “It was nice to go to work.”
Even after the film wrapped, things didn’t turn romantic. “They both insist there was no love affair,” confirms the source. If they’d acted on their crushes, “maybe we could have survived” as a couple, Sandra mused in 2021, though she’s grateful they pursued friendship instead of taking that risk. “We just get to grow up together on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for a dinner and try to work together. And the longer time goes on, the more in awe I am of [him],” she explained, adding, “Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Probably not.”
Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves Stay Connected
They’d love to do a new project together. “Before I die, before I leave this planet, I do think that Keanu and I need to do something in front of the camera. Are we, you know, in wheelchairs or with walkers? Maybe,” Sandra half-joked in May.
Their onscreen reunion might even come via a Speed reboot. “We’d freakin’ knock it out of the park,” Keanu has insisted, though Sandra again teases that a third flick in the action series — Keanu did not return for the 1997 sequel, which flopped — would be “the geriatric version. It won’t be fast.”
Sandra and Keanu don’t need work as an excuse to meet up, though. “They’ll text, plan a lunch — she’ll bring her kids, and he’ll bring his girlfriend” of more than five years, artist Alexandra Grant, 51, says the source. “Or sometimes it’s just one-on-one.”
The two have more in common than some realize. “They both put up their guard,” notes the source. “But once they let you in, they love you forever. They’re each other’s biggest supporter and cheerleader. They consider themselves family.”
Like Sandra, Keanu has also experienced deep loss. In 1999, his daughter with girlfriend Jennifer Syme was stillborn on Christmas Eve. Keanu and Jennifer soon split amid their shared grief; any hope for a lasting reconciliation was destroyed when, at 28, she was killed in a car accident in 2001. Before that, Keanu’s best friend, actor River Phoenix, died of a drug overdose at 23 in 1993 while Keanu was filming Speed.
“He has gone through a lot, even though he doesn’t let on about it,” Sandra said in 1994. “I think he hides a great pain.” Keanu later admitted as much, saying, “Grief and loss, those are things that don’t ever go away. They stay with you.”
As Sandra continues to heal after losing Bryan, whom she’s called “the love of my life,” Keanu’s providing some inspiration. “Bryan was very special, irreplaceable, really,” says the source. “But when Sandra sees how happy Keanu is with Alexandra, it gives her hope that someday, maybe she can also find love again.”
