Fans Are Nervous to See How Kate Handles That Traumatic Baby News on ‘This Is Us’
Fans all around our great nation were left stunned on Tuesday, Nov. 14, when it was revealed on This Is Us that Kate Pearson had suffered a miscarriage. Although the emotional series is known for shocking viewers with life-changing reveals (okay, maybe not life-changing for us), no one saw this coming given that the night’s episode had revolved around the oldest Pearson kid, Kevin.
Chrissy Metz gave Entertainment Weekly a sneak peek into how Kate will deal with this trauma. “It’s definitely raw, and we see Kate at her most vulnerable,” the actress shared. “We’ve not seen her this vulnerable yet. She feels very alone in this journey, until she has help from people who really do love her, and she’s just so uncertain about the whole journey because it’s unchartered territory.”
The aspiring singer had kept her pregnancy a secret at first due to its high-risk nature (Kate’s struggle with weight has been an ongoing storyline), and now what she feared would happen has happened. And it will impact her dynamic with fiancé Toby.
“It tests their relationship,” Chrissy said. “What’s so great about [the writers] bringing it to light in our show is that nobody knows how to address the situation, nobody knows how to talk about it, no one knows when to talk about it, where to talk about it. There’s just a lot of shame surrounding it. [Kate’s] feeling that she’s the only one going through it but your other half actually goes through it too even though it might not be a physical change. He’s definitely feeling the pain and the grief as well.”
Executive producer Issac Aptaker hinted that Kate might even place part of the blame on Toby. “She was being as protective as possible in terms of getting invested in this pregnancy. And Toby was the one who broke her open and said, ‘No, this is exciting. We have to believe in this, and we have to get psyched about it,'” he explained. “So, for now, to have to go the other way, there’s certainly a lot of resentment she’s probably going to be feeling toward Toby, about ‘How could you do this? How could you get me excited and now it’s gone?’”
Tune in to This Is Us tonight, Nov. 21, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC to see how it all unfolds.
