Paging Dr. Izzie Stevens! Katherine Heigl is considering scrubbing back in on Grey’s Anatomy — if showrunner Shonda Rhimes can forgive and forget their longtime feud. The 39-year-old actress “has always wanted to return to the show,” an insider tells Life & Style magazine, on newsstands now.

“But it really comes down to whether or not Shonda is on board.” Katherine, who won an Emmy for her role, infamously left the medical drama in 2010 after dissing the writers’ room for not giving her “juicy, dramatic, emotional” material. “Bringing back one of Grey’s most beloved characters,” admits the insider, “would give the show a real shot in the arm!”

“I’d love to know where Izzie is,” Katherine’s said. But would leading ladies Caterina Scorsone, Kelly McCreary and Ellen Pompeo? We’re sure characters would enjoy catching up with Dr. Stevens, as she makes up the original cast of interns-turned-surgeons.

The last time Katherine acted on the show, there was a complete different cast. After Izzie’s departure, major characters such as Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, Eric Dane’s Mark Sloan, and Chryler Leigh’s Lexie Sloan followed, only their characters have no return as they fatally died. It’s quite typical of Grey’s Anatomy to dramatically change the plot and kill off fan favorites. However, there’s still hope.

Other main characters like Meredith Grey’s “person,” Christina Yang, continue to live and simply exited the series, leaving fans anticipating a return down the line. Katherine’s character, Isobel Stevens, exited the show in season six, so it would be interesting to see how she fits in with the rest of the cast now.

Grey’s Anatomy, currently in its 15th season, only has a handful of characters from around the time Katherine was involved, including protagonist Ellen, whose contract is up in season 16. Perhaps they’ll bring Izzie back if Meredith decides to leave for good? Stay tuned!
