Joe briefly spoke about his split from Taylor – whom he dated for six years until they called it quits in April 2023 – while speaking to The Sunday Times on June 15.

“In thinking on what I was going to say, I would think and hope that anyone and everyone can empathize,” Joe told the outlet when asked if he has listened to her album, The Tortured Poets Department, which was released in April. “This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but just thinking about what I want to talk about.”

He added, “I would hope that anyone and everyone can empathize and understand the difficulties that come with the end of a long, loving, fully committed relationship of over six and a half years. That is a hard thing to navigate.”

In the song, Taylor sings about her ex going on a date with someone new at a bar called the Black Dog. Many fans believed the track was inspired by Joe allegedly visiting a pub of the same name in Vauxhall, London.

When Joe was asked if he’s ever been to The Black Dog in Vauxhall, London, he implied the song was not about him by coyly responding, “I’ve never been to Vauxhall.” However, the reporter noted that Joe gave “a smile that hints there is more to say.”
