Thank u, next! Ariana Grande is skipping the 2019 Billboard Music Awards, despite accepting the award for “Woman of the Year” at the 2018 Billboard Women in Music event this past December, and being announced as a performer for the big show on May 1. So, why is the songstress missing out?

“Happy @bbmas day everybody!!” the pop star, 25, wrote on Instagram on Wednesday, May 1. “So wish we were there with u in person tonight. thank you @billboard for all of your endless support, love and for having us perform for u remotely from the @sweetener world tour. we love you.” To prove that there’s no hard feelings, Billboard left three black hearts in the comments.

While Ari won’t physically be at the show, fans will actually get an even more special and unique performance because of it. Ariana teamed up with T-Mobile to be able to perform her hit “7 Rings” from one of the sold-out stops on her tour, which is what fans will see during the BBMAs. How cool!

Ari isn’t just performing, she’s also nominated for a whopping nine awards including some big ones like Top Artist, Top Female Artist, and Chart Achievement. The last one certainly makes sense, as her music has been dominating charts over the past year. In 2018, her Sweetener album hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, and less than six months later her next album Thank U, Next did the same! That makes Ari the record holder for the shortest gap between No. 1 albums for a female artist since 1975. Pretty impressive if you ask us!

Ari will be in good company as a performer at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards. Also slated to take the stage are Taylor Swift, Brendon Urie, BTS featuring Halsey, Ciara, Kelly Clarkson, Lauren Daigle, Dan + Shay, Jonas Brothers, Tori Kelly, Khalid, Madonna and Maluma, Panic! at the Disco and Mariah Carey, who will be receiving the ICON Award during the big night. We can’t wait to watch it all unfold!
