American Idol’s first live show kicked off last night, but one judge wasn’t there for the beginning.
Nicki Minaj made quite an entrance by arriving 15 minutes late to the show — a first in Idol history.
“Which one of you gave her the wrong directions? Who drained the gas from her car?” Host Ryan Seacrest joked to the other judges, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson.

Naturally, Mariah rolled her eyes and twirled her hair after finding out about the “Super Bass” singer’s tardiness.
According to Ryan, she was late due to “congestion on the 405.”
But the show went on without her. Curtis Finch Jr. was the first contestant to hit the stage. Though Nicki missed it completely, she managed to sneak into her seat during a commercial break.
And it was obvious the 30-year-old hip-hop star didn’t have any time to get herself fully camera ready. She wore a black hoodie and oversized sunglasses.
VIDEO: Why Nicki Minaj cried on American Idol
Last night, all 10 contestants took on the music of past winners — and hopefuls Candice Glover and Amber Holcomb, who sang Shirley Bassey’s “I (Who Have Nothing)” and “Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This”, respectively, stole the show.
“You shouldn’t be able to perform that song ever again on Idol, because you destroyed and annihilated it,” Nicki told Glover following her performance.
Mariah agreed: “Every time you are on stage, it’s mesmerizing. I’m transfixed watching you because a singer of your caliber can do pretty much anything.”
POLL: Do you think her tardiness was a diva moment?
After Amber ended the show with her jaw-dropping rendition, Keith couldn’t stop raving about it. “That was beautiful,” he said. “I love that song for you. I love how effortless you sing.”
Nicki echoed the same sentiment. “That was the best performance of the night,” she said. “Your voice and your aura remind me of Whitney Houston’s first album.”
