A royal war? Reports about a feud between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have been circulating since the Duchess of Cambridge was allegedly brought to tears during the wedding prep for the actress and Prince Harry‘s big day. The one-hour TLC special Kate v. Meghan: Princesses at War? aired on February 5 and dove into these stories and provided insight from experts about their relationship.

While most of the show was pure speculation about whether or not the two are at odds, it did divulge some interesting details about the relationship between the sisters-in-law. Keep in mind, Kensington Palace has never fully addressed feud rumors so it’s definitely up for interpretation.

Whether you believe the conflict reports or not, it’s actually not surprising that people would be entranced with the idea of strain between the royal family members. “The rift was an inevitable narrative because the idea of two duchesses having a cat fight was too irresistible for the press not to go near,” royal reporter Katie Nicholl said.

If the two are at odds, chances are it won’t get any better. The Duchess of Sussex will have to fall in line behind the mom-of-three when she and Prince William eventually move up in ranking. “Kate will always be in front – this is going to be alien to Meghan, having to curtsy to her sister-in-law in public,” according to Princess Diana‘s former butler, Paul Burrell.

He continued, “She’s a strong, independent woman whose views will be difficult to change and that’s where she’s going to clash with members of the royal family and the royal household if she doesn’t conform and do as she’s told.”

On the other hand, some people speculated that the bickering was actually between their husbands over William not being welcoming enough to Meghan. “I was told the (rift) was actually between the brothers,” reporter Katie divulged.

Feud or no feud, this conversation is probably just getting started.
