Ever since the news broke that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry became engaged, fans have wanted to know everything about the actress, her parents, and the rest of her family. After all, she's the American commoner who managed to snag herself a royal — not exactly the usual archetype of a royal bride. So who are the parents of Meghan Markle? The actress, who's half-black and half-white, was raised in LA by her mother and father, who are from Pennsylvania and Ohio. But her roots and her family history run much deeper than that. Scroll down for more details!
Who are Meghan Markle's parents, Tom Markle and Doria Radlan?
The duo first crossed paths in the late '70s before tying the knot. Though they separated when Meghan was just a little girl, she credits both of them for her work ethic and charitable spirit. "My parents came from little, so they made a choice to give a lot… be it a hug, a smile, or a pat on the back to show ones in need that they would be alright," she previously shared. Growing up, Meghan was close with both of them, even though they divorced when she was around six.
It helps that she has so much in common with both her mom and her dad. While she and her father share a history with the entertainment industry, Meghan working in front of the camera and her father working behind it, she and her mom share a love for yoga and philanthropy. Even with her life becoming more complex in the spotlight (as if working in Hollywood hadn't already been enough), she's still made time for Thomas and Doria. Between her acting and activist work, Meghan was able to fit in trips to the yoga studio with her instructor mom and visit Toronto to see her dad.

Before she deleted her Instagram, pictures of Meghan Markle's parents regularly decorated her page. She shared plenty of messages of love for both her mom and her dad on her social media sites. Whether for Mother's Day, Father's Day, or just because, she'd post throwback photos and adorable snaps. And she always captioned them with the sweetest things to say. "I'm still your buckaroo," Meghan wrote to her dad in 2016 for Father's Day. "To this day your hugs are still the very best in the whole wide world. Thanks for my work ethic, my love of Busby Berkeley films & club sandwiches, for teaching me the importance of handwritten thank you notes, and for giving me that signature Markle nose."
Her mom got her fair share of shout outs, too. "No filter. Just happiness with my mama bear," Meghan wrote to accompany one adorable video with Doria. She also posted plenty of pictures to celebrate important moments in their lives together — like her mom's graduation from a master's program where she got her degree in social work. The shot was adorable, and proved just how proud the actress was of her mom. Watch the video below to see even more pics of Doria and find out how Meghan Markle's parents met.
What ethnicities are Tom Markle and Doria Radlan?
Tom is Dutch-Irish, while Doria is African-American. And while Meghan is proud to be biracial, she's talked about how she and her family have face their fair share of struggles. Previously, she shared that her mom was once mistaken for her nanny. And they've had to deal with racism and slurs, too. "I was home in LA on a college break when my mom was called the ‘N’ word. We were leaving a concert and she wasn’t pulling out of a parking space quickly enough for another driver," she wrote in Elle magazine.
"Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating," she explained. "To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman." And things didn't get any easier for them once she became associated with the royal family. In fact, the palace even had to release a statement about the harassment that had been happening, including "racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments." Luckily, the couple seems to be weathering the media storm together as the royal family becomes more diverse than it ever has.
Have Meghan Markle's parents met Prince Harry?
With her wedding just around the corner, the actress is ready to become a part of the royal family — and the royal family is ready to welcome her, too. Prince Harry's 2017 Invictus Games were even hosted in Toronto, and it seems they made the perfect meeting spot for the royal and his future mother-in-law. And just in time, too, considering it was only a month or so before Meghan and Harry became engaged. At the games, Doria and her daughter watched the events together, looking tighter than ever. They also got the chance to hang out with Harry himself when he wasn't too busy keeping an eye on things.
As far as meeting her dad, well, the jury's still out on that. It seems the two haven't officially met — though Thomas Markle was invited to the wedding, of course. "Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are very much looking forward to welcoming Ms. Markle's parents to Windsor for the wedding," an official royal statement shared. "Mr. Thomas Markle and Ms. Doria Ragland will be arriving in the UK in the week of the wedding, allowing time for Prince Harry's family, including The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to spend time with them before the big day."
However, some health concerns seem like they've thrown a wrench in those plans. Meghan's dad, Tom, recently had a heart attack — and he's been suffering from further chest pains. A necessary surgery will keep him from making the trip. "[The doctors] will go in and clear blockage, repair damage and put a stent where it is needed," Prince Harry's future father-in-law told TMZ. Instead, he's thinking that the former actress' mom may be the one to walk her down the aisle. Guess the prince and papa bear will have to find some other time to get to know each other better.
