BFFs understand. Tennis pro Serena Williams revealed just that when reporters asked about her attendance at Meghan Markle‘s new son’s christening on July 6 — an event she will be sadly missing due to a work commitment.

The 37-year-old confirmed she would not be in attendance for Archie’s religious ceremony, as she will be playing her third round at Wimbledon against Julia Gorges. “No, I’m working on Saturday,” she affirmed. “Yeah, so. She understands work.”

The author also acknowledged the fact that her pal came out to support during her second-round bout with Kaja Juvan on July 4. “Yes, I knew she was there and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis, so I was happy,” the mother of one said happily during the press conference.

Meg and Serena have been buds since 2014 and have only gotten closer as the years have gone on. In May 2018, the tennis champ and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, were some of the star-studded (and honestly, more fashionable — remember Serena’s hat?) guests at Meg and Prince Harry‘s wedding.

Shortly after the nuptials, Meg and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, came out to support Serena during her Wimbledon matches in July 2018. Most recently, the fashion designer was the brain behind her pal’s epic baby shower in NYC back in February.

“Planning something like that takes a lot of effort,” the activist told Business of Fashion in April. “I’m a perfectionist, so I’m like, ‘Let’s make it perfect.’”

Considering how involved Serena was in the lead-up to Archie’s birth, her absence at the royal baby’s first milestone is a big bummer, but we so appreciate understanding friends. Besides, it’s hard to keep a free schedule when you’re this in demand — yeah, Serena, we’re talking about baby Archie here!

Though we’ll miss her at the event, we can’t wait for the next time Meg and Serena team up.
