Royal behind the wheel! In a very rare video, Kate Middleton was captured driving herself into Buckingham Palace, and it’s causing quite a stir. Obviously, Kate was a ~regular~ person before marrying Prince William so it’s not surprising she would have her driver’s license, but it still looks so weird. According to Town & Country, the royal family has access to 24-hour chauffeurs so they don’t really need to drive themselves anywhere.

She Also Doesn’t Drive With Prince William.
This photo of William driving to Prince Charles’ 70th birthday shows that Kate also likes to sit in the front seat sometimes. Duncan Larcombe, a biographer of Prince Harry, explained that since the party wasn’t “an official occasion,” they were allowed to drive themselves.

They Still Beef Up Security, Though.
Even if the royal family members decide to drive themselves, it’s not without backup. “They’ll still have their protection officers in tow,” the biographer explained. “They would have had at least two vehicles driving with them and a protection officer in the vehicle with them, all armed.”

So, Why Do They Bother Driving At All?
Duncan’s reasoning behind the family driving is simple. “They’re funny. They try and be as normal as they can. For them, it’s quite nice to be able to drive themselves and to be independent,” he said. Considering Kate wasn’t born into royalty, it looks like she’s enjoying the free rides.
