Austin Butler and Kaia Gerber Split After 3 Years of Dating: Inside the Couple’s Reported Breakup
Austin Butler and girlfriend Kaia Gerber called it quits after three years of dating, according to TMZ.
The former couple reportedly ended their relationship before the holiday season, sometime in the final months of 2024, the outlet reported on Tuesday, January 7. The Elvis star, 33, and model reportedly split on good terms.
Neither Austin nor Kaia, 23, have publicly confirmed their breakup.
Fans were worried about the status of Austin and Kaia’s relationship when he wasn’t spotted on her recent trip to Mexico with her family, as he’s usually her plus-one. Not to mention, the Bikeriders star skipped Kaia’s 23rd birthday party in September 2024.
“Kaia had a blast with her family and friends at Disney, but Austin’s absence was very noticeable,” an insider exclusively told Life & Style at the time. “It sparked rumors that the romance is over.”
Later that month, a second insider revealed that Kaia was putting effort into the relationship, but Austin was “outgrowing” their partnership.
“Austin and Kaia have always had a lot of things working against them,” a friend of Austin exclusively told Life & Style at the time.
“These are issues Kaia has always had a hard time getting her arms around, along with Austin’s crazy schedule where he’s been filming almost constantly for the last 18 months,” source No. 2 later explained. “Austin is a good guy, but everyone is being realistic about the fact that he’s way more invested in his career than he is in this relationship. At least that’s how it looks when you spend time with them as a couple.”
Before their romance crumbled, Austin and Kaia sparked engagement rumors after purchasing a house together in May 2023. At the time, celebrity gossip Instagram account Deux Moi claimed that Austin “proposed back in April, but [he and Kaia] want to keep it low-key.”
“Austin Butler [and] Kaia Gerber just bought a house together … do we think this is the next step???” Deux Moi captioned its Instagram video post.
Previously, a third source exclusively told Life & Style that the former Nickelodeon star and the Vogue cover model’s relationship had gotten serious.
“Kaia has stepped up her romance with Austin, and now they’re living together,” the third source said. “They’ve been going pretty strong and have talked about taking it to the next level, so she asked him to move in and he said ‘yes.’”
Since the two A-listers are busy bees, the third insider explained that the reason for moving in together was due to their hectic schedules.
“They’re both really busy doing their own separate projects, so it made sense since they wanted to spend more time together,” source No. 3 added. “It’s worked out great, which is why friends are already speculating that an engagement might not be that far off. First things first, this is big start.”
Just two months prior, Austin and Kaia sparked breakup rumors when he avoided a question about her while on the Academy Awards red carpet. However, they quickly shut down any split speculation when the two were seen attending the Vanity Fair Oscars Afterparty that evening.
The duo first started dating in December 2021, a separate source confirmed to Life & Style at the time. However, they did not go public as a couple until they attended the May 2022 Met Gala together.
Since then, the pair has made it a point to keep their romance away from the public eye as much as possible, despite attending a few red carpet events together and showing off a bit of PDA in front of the cameras.
While speaking with GQ at the time, the Dune: Part Two actor avoided commenting on his relationship with Kaia.
“I don’t think there’s anything I want to share about that,” he told the publication, adding, “But thank you for providing the space.”
