Despite the fact that Selena Gomez hasn’t attended the Grammy Awards since 2016, fans are still desperately holding out hope that the “Wolves” singer, 26, will show up on the red carpet. As much as we’d love for that to happen, too, it’s highly unlikely that Sel will make an appearance and here’s why …

For starters, she isn’t nominated for anything! This isn’t to say that A-listers only attend awards show when they can snag a trophy, but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Beyond that, and on a more serious note, Selena is committed to focusing on her mental health above anything else.

In 2016, Selena attended the Grammy Awards alongside her bestie Taylor Swift.

In October 2018, the pop star entered a psychiatric facility after suffering an emotional breakdown. Since completing her month-long rehab stay, Selena has remained mostly out of the spotlight, save for taking to Instagram to make a few important announcements, and of course, to update her diehard fans on her progress.

“It’s been awhile since you have heard from me, but I wanted to wish everyone a happy new year and to thank you for your love and support,” she wrote on January 14. “Last year was definitely a year of self-reflection, challenges and growth. It’s always those challenges which show you who you are and what you are capable of overcoming. Trust me, it’s not easy, but I am proud of the person I am becoming and look forward to the year ahead. Love you all.”

On January 24, the brunette beauty took to social media once more to announce her new single with longtime BFF and fellow musician Julia Michaels. “My sweet soul sister. Julia you have been a huge part of my life. You have taught me how to have courage when I have self doubt. This song is extremely close to my heart as I’ve experienced anxiety and know a lot of my friends do too. You’re never alone if you feel this way. The message is much needed and I really hope you guys like it!”

As amazing as it is to see Selena slowly easing back into her career, attending an awards show is a big leap. For now, we’ll be enjoying her latest tune and patiently waiting for what else she has in store for 2019.
