It’s winter and we’re cold. If your skin is looking a little tired and dull, we’ve recruited help from celebrity makeup artist Emma Willis. Former Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher calls her the “glow queen,” and she’s the woman behind some of the most gorgeous complexions in Hollywood, including Katherine Schwarzenegger, Jana Kramer and Audrina Patridge. She spoke exclusively with Life & Style to share her tips, tricks and must-have products.

First of all, oil is definitely something that should be in your skin regime, according to the beauty guru. “I think a lot of people don’t use oil … They’re scared of oil, especially if they have oily skin themselves.” Emma said, adding that oil is equally great for all skin types. Some of her favorites include Tata Harper‘s Beautifying Face Oil, Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil and Skyn Iceland Arctic Face Oil. Basically, anything rich in Vitamins A and C.

Besides steering clear of alcohol which she warns is “extremely drying for the skin” (Dry January round two, anyone?), the blonde beauty recommends going for thicker coverage. “In place of a lightweight moisturizer, something like Super Rich Repair by Dermalogica is amazing for the skin.” The makeup artist also advised boosting the number of times you apply your thicker creams. “In the winter, I would still use a much denser, richer moisturizer in the day to give you that barrier.”

Before you start slathering on every moisturizer and oil you have in your medicine cabinet, Emma disclosed that too much of a good thing is possible when it comes to products. Be wary not to “strip [the] skin’s natural oils” by using too many things on your face. She explained, “When I speak to people about what treatments they do to their skin, invariably, I find that the ones who have problematic skin are the ones that use way too many products and they’re doing it morning and night. Basically, you may kind of need to tone back your skin care,” she explained.

If your skin is flaking and you can’t get by without exfoliating one or two times a week, try a very gentle product like Dermalogica‘s Daily Microfoliant.

To avoid overdoing your skincare, when you wake up, don’t wash off all the products you used the night before. Emma says to use “a hot cloth in the morning to wake up the skin … as hot as you can so that it warms up the face like a mini facial. Then, apply your daily moisturizer or a light oil for the face and then go about putting on your makeup application.”

Don’t forget the details! The makeup queen swears by Ole Henriksen Banana Bright Eye Crème to brighten and decrease puffiness and Elizabeth Arden Intensive Lip Repair Balm for a kissable pout.

So, now you’re all moisturized and ready to play with makeup, what’s next? The Hollywood vixen suggests trying Beauty Blur and Body Blur by Vita Liberata to feel like you just got back from that Caribbean cruise. “It’s a great product. It’s organic and great for the skin as well,” Emma informed. “You can apply it and … you don’t actually need makeup if you don’t want to. If you’re one of those people who doesn’t like foundation … then you can just get that luminous glow with no products.”

She suggests trying Beauty Blur if you’re less comfortable with bronzing since it has a lighter and sheerer consistency. However, whether it’s a red carpet or everyday look, Emma loves playing with Body Blur on the face.

If you want to look healthy and luminous in the dead of winter, follow Emma’s advice and get your glow on, girl!
