Demi Burnett Officially Announces Split From Kristian Haggerty After Getting Engaged on ‘BIP’
It’s over! After getting engaged on Bachelor in Paradise nearly three months ago, Demi Burnett and Kristian Haggerty have called it quits. The former contestant from Colton Underwood‘s season announced the news on October 31 in a lengthy Instagram caption.
“What has always been at the forefront of our relationship is love and care for one another,” the 24-year-old began. “Our priority is doing what is best for us. With a heavy heart full of love for one another, we have decided it is best for us to take a step back from our relationship.”
Demi and Kristian, 27, made history as the franchise’s first same-sex couple. They casually dated before season 6, but Demi arrived on the beach in Mexico looking to find clarity about what she wanted. It turned out, it was Kristian — who surprised her on the show and ended up staying for the rest of the summer. The pair got engaged on decision day and have both been sporting Neil Lane engagement rings ever since.
Demi continued by noting that things simply were not working as they were. “We ultimately want what is best for us in the long run and for us right now, that means being apart and growing individually,” she explained. “We have felt so much love and support from you all as you’ve followed our journey together and for that we are grateful.”
Although the ladies have decided to go their separate ways, Demi hopes that the love they shared continues to inspire fans. “We will forever be proud of the impact our love story has made and we hope it has helped others feel more accepted and confident within themselves. We hope it reminded others they aren’t alone and don’t need to be ashamed of who they are,” she wrote.
There doesn’t seem to be any saltiness about their split. Demi added, “And we hope it shows that two people can love one another in different ways and for us right now that is apart. But we remain committed to encouraging each other, supporting each other and continuing forward in a way best for us.”
Kristian posted the same message to her feed. In addition, she shared a sweet snap on her Instagram Story of the two on their engagement day with the caption, “You will always have a place in my heart.”
