Halsey posed with Queen Latifah at the prestigious event. The two ladies were feeling the color black for the night and both looked stunning. During the event, the “Back Hand Slide” artist helped to induct her longtime friend Missy Elliott into the hall of fame.

Halsey looked unbelievably edgy in this ensemble and it fit her like a glove. The outfit was the perfect mix of punk rock with a feminine vibe.

She Works Hard

Halsey’s first top single was “Without Me” and the singer admitted to Billboard that she was shocked by its success. “I didn’t know ‘Without Me’ was going to be my first solo No. 1. I put it out on a whim and hoped my fans would take it as an answer to some of the things I was going through on a personal level,” she divulged.

It turns out, Halsey wrote it as therapy. She continued, “I made that song for me, and then when I saw how much it resonated with my fans and beyond … It’s because of the universal theme. Everyone knows what it feels like to be taken advantage of by someone you love.”

Tell Us How You Really Feel

The fact that the message was so raw was the true key. “A lot of songs are like, ‘I’m a bad bitch, you don’t know what you’re missing out on.’ But I think there are few that speak from a point of vulnerability and say, ‘You were taking advantage of me, and I would’ve kept letting you because I loved you so much.’ Admitting that naiveté, maybe that’s why it worked so well,” Halsey confessed. “It was very honest and very candid.”

During her acceptance speech, the “Eastside” singer said that she was particularly nervous because she couldn’t accept the award as Halsey, who she said was “the best version of myself.” It was all for Ashley.

The artist stayed completely candid during the whole time on stage. It felt very real and made us appreciate all her hard work even more.

The pop star we see on stage is exactly who the artist wants us to. She continued, “The Halsey that I get to be on paper, in songs and on the radio, she’s cool, I like her! She’s, like, pretty badass.”

Staying Candid

Songwriting was an outlet for a young Ashley. “I somehow found the ability to put into words a version of myself that I actually didn’t mind being so much at a time when I really f—king hated myself.”

Getting Real

While Halsey is incredible, we love Ashley just as much. The New Jersey native explained, “And so now I’ve immortalized a version of myself that’s amazing, but underneath all that is still just me: Self-critical and vulnerable and terrified and so, so, so overwhelmingly thankful for this.”

Irony?

Halsey looked so freaking fierce at the event but she noted that her nerves were getting the best of her. “I don’t know why I picked a suit because I’m suffocating,” she joked about sweating through her jacket.

Aside from receiving an award, Halsey also performed on stage. The moody lighting is a perfect compliment to her super sultry look.

Stuff She Cares About

The starlet was thrilled to spend a night centered completely around music. “You know, sometimes it’s kind of funny when you’re doing interviews and people want to ask you about who you’re dating and what you’re wearing,” Halsey told ABC Radio at the gala. “And you’re thinking to yourself, ‘Is anyone gonna ask me about my music?'”

A Strong Fan Base

She continued, “These are the moments where you’re reminded that people still do care about what you have to say — and I think, if anything, it’s just proven to me that my fans are unconditional [in their support].”

We’re in This Together

What’s next? Halsey feels certain that as long as the fans are listening, she’s not going anywhere. “We’ve been tapped into the same frequency for so long … So, provided I keep paying attention, they’re going to keep listening and we’re going to keep that bond alive.”
