We all know Normani slayed at the 2019 Video Music Awards from her outstanding performance to her many looks throughout the night. Jay “Stay Ready,” the 23-year-old’s hairstylist, exclusively revealed to Life & Style how he managed to give Normani a ’90s-inspired vibe while adding the perfect modern touch.

In the Fifth Harmony alum’s solo video for “Motivation,” she played tribute to the style and biggest music videos from the ’90s and 2000s, and she decided to bring that to life at the VMAs on Monday, August 26. “We have been obsessing with ’90s style, so of course we wanted to stay with the theme we have been keeping up with lately,” he said.

“She just basically gave all of us a theme and trusted our vision,” he continued. “Of course she wanted to know what we planned for her beforehand and we have a few creative calls days before the show but she trusts us to bring it.” For her look on stage, Normani rocked wild curls. Meanwhile, for her red carpet look, she opted for sleek side-swept waves, which Jay described as “fresh, fun and funky!”

To achieve her hairstyle, only a handful of products were used including a blow-dryer and a straightening iron. Jay confessed that he wanted to keep her red carpet ‘do simple as a way of making everything else pop. “Normani and I wanted to go with a more graceful, flowing waves of hair to draw attention to her sparkly, colorful outfit — and show off her amazing abs!”

Since Normani didn’t have to worry about looking good, she was able to focus all her energy on delivering. “She likes to stay calm and not let a lot of outside influences get to her while she prepares herself for any performance or event,” Jay confessed. “We are a pretty chill team but when she hits that stage all the preserved energy burst out of her and she kills it every time.” She surely does!
