Fire! Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello Heat Up the Stage With an Almost-Kiss at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards
Woof, señorita! Pop stars and rumored couple Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello really heated up the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards with their super sexy performance. The duo got cozy AF as they sang their hearts out on a candle-lit stage, wearing matching white outfits as they leaned in close and sang to each other. They may not have actually kissed, but that didn’t stop the folks watching at home from feeling like they’d somehow intruded on a private moment as the singers stroked each other and rubbed noses.
“Shawn and Camila really just did THAT,” one fan tweeted in awe after the duo was done. Another fan called their almost-kiss the “cutest moment on stage,” dubbing the singer the “couple of the year.” A third tweeted, “Phew!” at the sight of that nose rub, needing to take a second to catch their breath, because yeah, it was that hot. The whole thing can be pretty much summed up with this tweet: “[That] performance made my eyes water. Their chemistry is insane.”
Camila started dating her ex Matthew Hussey back in November 2018 — but by the end of June, their intense connection had fizzled out and Shawn became a big part of her life after their breakup. They released their song days before Camila’s split from her then-BF, 32, and barely a week later, rumors started to swirl about the former Fifth Harmony member, 22, and the pop crooner, 22.
Once an eyewitness spotted the rumored couple out together, all bets were off. “They were sitting with each other, facing each other and look very intimate,” a source told Us Weekly about one of their first sightings. “They left together holding hands.”
Then, at a July 6 Q&A session, Shawn shut down the dating rumors when asked by a fan for the truth. Cue the sighs (of relief or disappointment, take your pick). For the next month, the duo was spotted together frequently, holding hands and being otherwise entangled with each other — sometimes even kissing — out in the open. Obviously, fans could only deduce a relationship was a-brewin’.
On August 8, Shawn celebrated his birthday with a huge NYC bash … and you know he made a big show of having his new lady love there to ring in the big night. He pulled her in for an epic kiss, which was caught on camera and promptly blasted all over the internet for fans to gush over.
In an interview published by Variety that dropped around the same time as the b-day smooch, Camila admitted she fell in love while working on her album. “Falling in love is like an infinite amount of levels and layers and angles. I fell in love and just opened up,” she told the outlet. “Everything was written in present moment.”
Of course, she didn’t mention Shawn by name, but totally gushed when they asked about him. “I’ve known Shawn for such a long time,” she revealed. “And it’s so much fun getting to work and do things with somebody who means a lot to you.”
Sounds like an understatement to us.
