1991

Halle first came onto the scene in 1989, after snagging the role of Emily Franklin on Living Dolls — a spin-off of the popular series Who’s The Boss. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a mere 12 episodes. However, it definitely succeeded in making Halle a household name.

Following Living Dolls, Halle remained in TV for quite some time. In fact, that’s how she was known for most of the ‘90s.

A few of her more notable roles include Debbie Porter on Knots Landing and Queen on a mini-series of the same name.

By the mid-’90s however, Halle managed to land her first movie. She played Kathleen Mercer in a picture titled Father Hood. The film included other major stars like the late Patrick Swayze.

After that, her filmography pretty much skyrocketed. Some fan favorites include Zola Taylor in Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Storm in X-Men and of course, her depiction of Dorothy Dandridge — the first-ever African American to be nominated for an Academy Award in the top of a category.

Because of Halle’s amazing performance as Dorothy, she ended up winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie.

Halle played Leticia Musgrove in the film and costarred alongside Billy Bob Thorton. In a word, the film is freakin’ intense perfection. OK … that’s three, but seriously, if you’ve never seen it, hop to it!

Oh and of course, we can’t forget this amazing piece of cinematic history: After starring in Monster’s Ball, Halle became the first-ever black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
