It’s easy to settle into the background of the spotlight when your sibling becomes a star — but Lottie Tomlinson was determined to do something with the notoriety that came with being Louis Tomlinson‘s sister. The 20-year-old mega influencer sat down with Life & Style exclusively to chat about making a name for herself outside of One Direction and the legendary fanbase the band created.

“Yeah, I think we’re both pretty independent, and obviously I’ve got a lot of good opportunities, but I’ve just worked really hard myself to make a name for myself as me, not just Louis’ sister. I think I’m always working toward just being recognized for what I do and how I build up myself,” the blonde beauty dished about her burgeoning career amid her brother’s years in the biz.

She’s not doing too bad of a job of it, if we do say so ourselves! The Instagram sensation launched her own self-tan line, Tanologist, back in July 2018, exclusively with Superdrug in the U.K. — but the beloved brand recently made its way to the U.S. and found its permanent American home at Target as they celebrated their first birthday as a company.

“I always appreciate the opportunities that I have had, but also, you know, a lot of people kind of get this kind of opportunity and don’t really do much with it and I think I’ve just always reached and done as much as I can with it,” she said. “Always working toward people seeing that I worked really hard for it myself, not just because I’m Louis’ sister.”

In addition to her wildly successful tanning line (yeah, it works and fans love it), the Insta star just released a collab collection with U.K. clothing brand In The Style, and needless to say, fans are obsessed with that, too. The thing about Lottie is she’s not only smart, business-oriented and beautiful … she’s also present with her fans and that makes all the difference.

“Be really engaged with your followers. That’s really important because that’s going to get people really interested and involved,” she dished about her approach to creating an influencer environment people want to keep tabs on. “Just create really nice content. Be open and let people into your life. That’s kind of what people want to see, personal stuff. Just be connected with your followers.”

Seems like the reason Lottie is a sensation has everything to do with how great she is — not that she has a famous bro.
