It seems so dreamy, doesn’t it? The enigma of the creative “muse” is an age-old trope that’s been romanticized so much in recent years, it seems like every true great has someone in their life to thank for the inspiration. Grammy-winning country star Kacey Musgraves is no stranger to the concept — in fact, she considers her husband, Ruston Kelly, to be the one who fills that little inspirational space for her.

The 30-year-old country crooner, who is all about the mystical and magical, swore their meeting was fate. “If I wouldn’t have blocked off time to get off the road and try to create a new album and have the time to explore creatively, it makes me wonder if I would have met him. It was perfect timing,” she told Glamour magazine in an interview published on March 28.

The singer/songwriter, 30, really connected with Kacey through the music (uh, duh) and it all seemed so serendipitous for her to connect with someone when she needed the inspiration most. Plus, his work really opened her eyes. “His songs made me really emotional. I thought, This guy’s really clever, whoever he is,” she explained of meeting him at a songwriters showcase at the Bluebird Cafe years ago.

After the duo had been talking for a couple of months, the brunette had Ruston over to her place to write some music together. “And then it was ‘That’s all she wrote.’ Pun intended. Everything was right,” she revealed. “I didn’t have to shift any part of my personality to make it fit together, which isn’t really something I’ve had before.”

The couple got married in 2017 and it was with him that she found the ~inspo~ to write what became her Album of the Year winner, Golden Hour. “That whole time period was a big opening of heart for me. I started to see the world in a more fond, pretty light,” she told the outlet. “After meeting this person who really allows me to just be myself, not have to walk on eggshells for any reason, songs started pouring out.”
