Fans certainly weren’t expecting to learn last week that Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux decided to split after two years of marriage, however, this doesn’t have to be “the end” for either of their careers. In fact, if handled correctly, Jen and Justin may be able to actually benefit from this split!

“I think they have so far done a nice job in attempting to communicate to the media and fans that they are the only real transmitters of the truth. So far, they’ve won the first round of this,” brand expert Eric Schiffer reveals exclusively to Life & Style, adding that a major Hollywood breakup has the potential to tarnish a star’s reputation if it’s not handled right. “No one in Hollywood would have expected this seismic split, and this kind of perfect relationship or perception that a couple is rock solid impacts fans.”

The former couple confirmed their split last week in a statement via AP, which read, “Normally we would do this privately, but given that the gossip industry cannot resist an opportunity to speculate and invent, we wanted to convey the truth directly.” Jen’s publicist, Stephen Huvane, added this happened “at the end of last year.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Friends alum face a high-profile split, as she infamously called it quits from her first husband, Brad Pitt, back in 2005. “I think it just humanizes her more and allows her to further relate to her fans that have had similar experiences, and there’s a level of sympathy that also extends onto a star’s brand in these situations,” Eric continues. “Then, there’s also the whole intrigue about who she will date next, and the storyline associates to that. So, in many ways this can be positive if it’s managed well.”
