What Happened Between Rihanna and Katy Perry? A Hollywood Feud Everyone Missed
More bad blood? Katy Perry may have ended her ongoing feud with Taylor Swift, but it looks like she has some new issues with her old pal Rihanna.
So what happened between the former besties? That’s a tricky question. Rumors started swirling that the two had beef when RiRi didn’t invite Katy to her 2018 Met Gala afterparty. Not to mention, they looked really uncomfortable posing together on the red carpet after reportedly not seeing each other for almost two years following a mysterious falling out.
“They used to be close but Rihanna’s expression in the photo says it all,” a source told The Sun. “Katy was upset about the whole situation because Rihanna was cold to her and she wasn’t invited to her afterparty.”
Supposedly, the only reason Katy and Rihanna cozied up for a photo-op was because they had to. “Rihanna was chairing the Met Gala, she had to pose with a lot of the celebrity guests,” the source explained. “But, it was really uncomfortable when she was asked to have the photo with Katy.”
The two became “fast friends” way back in 2009 when they bonded over a purse. In 2010, Katy told Elle, “[Rihanna] had this cool studded Valentino bag that had sparkly stuff on it.” When RiRi said she would send Katy one as a gift, she didn’t believe her. “I was like, ‘Oh great, here’s one of those tricks who talks fast friends but never lives up to it.'”
But Rihanna followed through and sent Katy the bag for Valentine’s Day that year. Not only that, but Rihanna also threw the “Roar” singer a bachelorette party before she married Russell Brand and was speculated to have comforted her in the wake of their split. So they weren’t just good friends, they were great friends.
RiRi even gushed about Katy after that initial Elle interview in 2010. “I’ll tell you, you do not find people like [Katy] in this industry,” Rihanna said. “She’s gorgeous, charming and so unedited it’s scary. That’s what intrigued me most when I first met her: she said it like she saw it. I trust people like that.” Here’s to hoping Katy has access to more olive branches!
