Welcome to your skin check-in with Life & Style’s resident health and beauty expert, Dr. Will Kirby, a celebrity dermatologist and Chief Medical Officer of LaserAway. This week I’m reviewing “beauty hacks” from the Kardashian clan. Do their secrets work? Let’s dive in and find out!
Kourtney notes that her first hack is “double washing” her body in the shower. “I wash my body while conditioning my hair and then rinse it out and then wash my body again using a special body wash from my dermatologist,” the KUWTK star, 40, detailed on her lifestyle website, Poosh.com.
This not only wastes time, but it also wastes water. What Kourtney does in the shower is up to her, but there is no reason to think that washing twice will offer any benefit when compared to washing once. Kourtney then states the following: “I also use face creams that I don’t love on my body as a moisturizer so I’m not being wasteful of the products.”
This actually makes sense! You can absolutely use facial moisturization products on your body. I love that she’s finding a new way to repurpose a product she doesn’t love. That said, if she didn’t take a double shower then her skin wouldn’t be subject to unneeded desiccation and she might not even need the extra moisturizer. So, this is a great idea conceptually but again, preventable.
“When I’m getting ready for a big night out, I apply these gel patches (which I always keep in the fridge) under my eyes for at least five minutes prior to putting on any makeup,” Kourt wrote as her third tip. This is an absolutely valid hack. Keeping some skincare products in the fridge makes sense and patches or masks that are utilized to reduce puffiness can be stored in a cool environment to make them even more effective.
Let’s analyze Khloé’s first tip. ”To enhance lash growth: Use olive oil or vitamin E in place of pricey lash-lengthening treatments. Olive oil or vitamin E acts as a conditioner to help your lashes grow strong and healthy,” the Good American founder, 35, wrote in the same Poosh blog post.
Natural oils are great eyelash conditioners — they work by moisturizing the delicate lash hair and make it less prone to breakage. It’s important to note that this hack is actually a great idea. But if Khloé thinks that it will actually cause lashes “grow strong,” then she is misleading herself, as it absolutely won’t actually induce growth.
“For an at-home body scrub: Use brown sugar and honey as a natural and inexpensive exfoliant,” KoKo’s second hack read.
I’m not sure when Khloé last purchased honey, but this won’t be any less expensive than a store-bought body scrub. There is no reason to believe they it will work as well either. Moving on! “For an at-home lip plumper: Mix a bit of peppermint into your lip gloss to give a plumping effect,” True Thompson‘s mom suggested.
What a terrible idea! Peppermint oil is extremely concentrated and it’s going to do more harm than good. Sure, it might temporarily plump your lips but it will also cause irritant contact dermatitis. Fans, I’d recommend you avoid this hack.
Lastly, KoKo wrote, “Instead of shaving cream, use conditioner or coconut oil. It’s way more hydrating and does the trick.” Man, Khloé sure likes to use stuff in her kitchen. That said, this hack works! You can absolutely switch out shaving cream for coconut oil. Not only does it work great but it’s very hydrating and you’ll smell like you just got back from the islands! People used this frequently in the past and then it disappeared … but this hack is back!
First, Kris, 64, recommended that you “wash your face every night using a hot terry cloth washcloth.” Her reasoning? “It acts as a natural exfoliant by loosening dead skin cells, opens up the pores and softens the skin, prepping it for your night treatments.”
Well, this is a reasonable suggestion. However, make sure the cloth you use is very gentle and only use warm, not hot, water. Using water that’s too hot will stimulate sebum (oil) production and paradoxically, cause your pores to be congested.
“Make sure you get a new toothbrush every three weeks to support dental health,” Kris added. “Your mouth is like the holy grail of your body, and it’s so important to take care of your teeth. Don’t forget to floss every night.
I wouldn’t call good oral hygiene an actual ‘hack’ but she’s right! Change your tooth brush when necessary and floss. Additionally, if you have had a cold, discard your toothbrush and start over with a fresh one.
“I love overlining my lips with a darker lip liner,” Kim, 39, wrote. Um, OK. Is that really a hack, though? I’m not sure Kim understood the question. Let’s move on.
“Travel with your own pillowcase,” the longtime model, 24, recommended. “This will help avoid breakouts while on your trip and give you peace of mind knowing you’re resting your face on clean cases.”
There are very few things more disgusting than old pillows. But does anyone think that Kendall frequents low-end hotels? I strongly suspect that the hotels she stays in have fresh and clean pillows. That said, this is a good hack for your own home! Change your pillowcases frequently.
“To make a spray tan last longer, moisturize with body lotion every day — my Kylie Skin Body Lotion is my go-to,” the makeup mogul, 22, wrote.
This won’t work at all. Skin cell turnover will actually increase with the mechanical application of a moisturizer. So, if you want your spray tan to last longer, don’t listen to Kylie. This hack is wack!
