‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ Alum Katya Zamolodchikova Talks Recent Relapse, Rehab Stint

This is so sad. Earlier this month, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Katya Zamolodchikova opened up in a new interview about a substance abuse relapse that landed her in rehab earlier this year. The VH1 reality star — whose real name is Brian McCook — previously took a drag hiatus to focus on getting better.

The fan favorite told Radar Online about using meth and more, which led to “hallucinations, visions [and] auditory hallucinations that took place in the form of God” and a “complete and total psychotic break from reality.” She told the publication, “I could not tell what was real, and what was not real. [My friends and family members] tried to make me go to rehab, I said, ‘Fine, fine fine.’ My dad said, ‘You do what’s right for you,’ and my mom said, ‘You better do it, b–ch!'” We are glad to hear the star got help!

Katya’s [Viceland’s The Trixie & Katya Show](https://www.viceland.com/enus/show/the-trixie-and-katya-show)_ co-host, Trixie Mattel, previously opened up to Life & Style about her friend’s struggle. “I’ll just say this. Mental health and sobriety is not a straight line and Drag Race is a family and we support our family members through anything. The best part is my sister is tending to her personal health,” she said back in January. “Katya is getting healthy, so I’m happy for her. We’re still cool with each other. I still follow her on every platform and I still call and text her every day.”

Katya first competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race during Season 7 and came in fifth place, and also appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars 2, when she was named runner-up. She announced her drag hiatus earlier this year during an Instagram live video and resurfaced again earlier this week.
