There's no denying Todd Chrisley's adorable granddaughter Chloe Chrisley is the best part of Chrisley Knows Best. However, viewers still don't understand why the Chrisleys are raising the four-year-old cutie— and not her parents Kyle Chrisley and Angela Johnson.
In 2012, Kyle welcomed his baby girl with then girlfriend Angela, but he struggled with drug addiction stemming from mental health issues. "Kyle is bipolar and normally, people that are bipolar, they seek out a way to self-medicate, which is what Kyle has done since he’s been young,” Todd told E! News in 2014. His ex-girlfriend also confirmed Kyle's drug use and accused Kyle of abusing her during her pregnancy.
"He grabbed me and choked me when I was pregnant,” she told Life & Style exclusively. "There was a time when he got mad at me and came at me with a knife while I was holding Chloe. He was talking about stabbing me, then threw a bottle of pills and hit me and Chloe right in the face with them." He was arrested and charged with assault one year after his daughter's birth.
Since losing custody of his daughter, Kyle has accused his family multiple times of using Chloe to boost ratings for their reality series. "My dad showed no interest in Chloe at all until the show and until it was pointed out that having a mixed race child and getting her and all that would be good for his demographic," he told the Daily Mail at the time. "He didn’t want to see her before then. He said he wanted nothing to do with her."
To make matters worse, Angela, who at one point shared custody of her daughter with the Chrisleys, was arrested in 2016 for allegedly claiming Chloe as a dependent to defraud medicaid and food stamps. Following Season 3 of Chrisley Knows Best, Chloe was taken off the show after Kyle threatened to sue the network. "There was no other choice than to pull her from the show,” Todd explained to Radar Online. "At the end of the day, we had to do what was best for Chloe. We did not want to drag her through all this and there was no way that we were going to pay Kyle a penny."
Today, Kylie is sober, remarried, and living in Georgia with his new wife Alexus. However, he still has no relationship with his famous family. "I do not talk to my family but I wish them nothing but the best," Kyle told Radar last year. "I have moved on with my life I am just going to be the best father and husband that I can be."
The couple recently bought a 3,000-square foot home and are busy planning their future together — seemingly without Chloe. "I cannot wait to start a family with my wife once we are all settled in," he added. "She is my best friend and is going to make a great mother."
As for the Chrisleys, they are just glad Chloe is back on the show and thriving. "Chloe is our family, and we are glad that the world gets to see such a beautiful child grow, explore and come into herself so brilliantly through love and respect," Todd told Us Weekly. We couldn't agree more!
